SARANAC — Mallory Honan tied the game late in regulation and Mary Elizabeth Franke won it in the second sudden-victory stanza Wednesday night as Northeastern Clinton upset top-seeded Beekmantown, 2-1, in the Section VII Class B girls' soccer semifinals.
"I'm proud of the players," said Northeastern Clinton coach Josie Gilroy. "Beekmantown is a very difficult team to mark because they have some great forwards.
"It was a total team effort, and I'm just excited for our team."
The third time was a charm for the fourth-seeded Cougars, who dropped 5-4 and 1-0 decisions to the Eagles during the regular season.
The game was scoreless until Lauren Gonyea gave the Eagles the lead at 21:22 of the second half with Jessica Huber assisting.
But Honan forced overtime when she scored with 6:54 left in the contest off a Molly Roush assist.
The teams stayed tied through two overtime stanzas and the first sudden-victory period before Franke won it at 2:44.
"Franke got a pass from Alli Ebersol, made a quick turn and took a shot from just outside the box," Gilroy said. "The ball deflected off a defender and went into the corner of the net."
Beekmantown held a 24-12 shot advantage. Ayisha Loya made 20 saves in the Northeastern Clinton nets, and Megan Leary stopped eight shots for the Eagles.
"Loya had a great game," Gilroy said.

SARANAC — Marle Curle and Sarah Carter scored second-half goals to provide the margin of difference as the Hornets advanced to the finals.
Curle opened the scoring at 2:16 of the second half after Ashley Menard won a 50-50 for the ball and it bounced to Curle's feet. Curle put it over the keeper's head.
Carter took a feed from Madison Trombley, beat a defender one-on-one and put the ball inside the far post at 9:31.
Plattsburgh held a 17-7 advantage in shots and Emily Schultz was in net for the shutout with six saves. Jena Finnegan stopped 11 shots for AuSable Valley.
"Meagan Gadzuk-Shea played really well in the middle for us, and having Sarah Carter back was a big boost," Plattsburgh coach Tim Mulligan said.
"I thought Amanda Hamilton was strong in the middle for them. They obviously had some injuries. So they didn't have much offense, but they played well defensively."
