Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Wells pulls off soccer upset

Chazy, Lake Placid, Keene advance to semifinals with shutouts



WILLSBORO — Lizzie Perkins scored the game-winning goal 4:16 into the first overtime Thursday and Wells upset Willsboro, 2-1, in the Section VII Class D girls' soccer quarterfinals.

Perkins decided the issue with a direct kick from just outside the penalty area.

"She was about five yards outside the area and put the shot into the upper left-hand corner," said Willsboro coach Jeff Marcotte. "It was a nice shot."

Perkins assisted on Wells' first goal, which was scored by Heather Abbott with 22:41 gone in the opening half.

Willsboro then drew even at 2:51 of the second stanza when Marion James scored off a Krystal Porter assist.

The Warriors held a 21-9 advantage in shots, with Emily MacKenzie making 14 saves in net for Wells. Stevie Burrows recorded six stops for Willsboro.

"Their goalie made two point-blank saves with the game scoreless in the game's first 10 minutes," Marcotte said. "She played a good game for them.

"They made good on their opportunities and we didn't."

CHAZY — Victoria Reynolds scored the first two goals of the game and the top-seeded Eagles blanked Elizabethtown-Lewis.

Astrid Kempainen, who controlled the middle of the field, added two second-half goals for Chazy, which will host Keene in the semifinals.

Victoria Reynolds and Astrid Kempainen also had an assist each.

Megan Reynolds had a first-half goal for the Eagles and Chelsea Guay tallied after intermission.

Chazy held a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes and finished with a 28-1 edge in shots.Katharine Tooke posted the shutout with one save and Chelsea Provost made 17 saves for the Lions.

LAKE PLACID — The Blue Bombers broke loose for five second-half goals on the way to a one-sided win over the Eagles.

Stephanie Murphy and Alex McFaddin scored in the first half to give Lake Placid a 2-0 lead.

Brenna Whitney, Ayla Thompson, Georgie Knox, Nina Lussi and Chelsea Preston then all tallied in the first 26 minutes of the second half.

Catherine Valentine was in net for the shutout with five saves. Allison Sherman made 17 stops for Westport.

"We had a nice balanced offense tonight," said Lake Placid coach Olaf Carlson. "Despite some illnesses this week, we came out ready to play. Our normal goalie (Elizabeth Leff) was out sick, but Catherine Valentine stepped up nicely.

"We had to concentrate on playing a steady game without any real knowledge of the D teams. And, with seven different players scoring, I think we did that."

Lake Placid will play Wells in the semifinals.

KEENE — Emma Nye and Amanda Boyle combined for two second-half goals as Keene advanced to the semifinals.

It was a scoreless game until the 22:58 mark of the second stanza when Boyle took the ball down the right side and crossed it in front to Nye, who headed it home.

Then, with 2:49 left in the contest, Boyle took a corner kick and Nye headed it into the net for her second goal of the game.

"Emma headed both crosses into the net and they were beautiful crosses," said Keene coach Fred Hooper. "Both were great soccer goals.

"Emma has been ill and she's still not feeling great. We put her in goal for a time today so she wouldn't have to run as much."

Megan Hall played the majority of time in net for Keene and made three saves. Allison Pine stopped seven shots for Indian Lake/Long Lake.

Keene got a strong game on defense from Jessica Caner.
