NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Liz Radigan made sure the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team closed out its season with a win Wednesday afternoon.
Radigan scored three goals as the Cardinals recorded a 4-2 nonconference victory at Norwich University.
It ended a frustrating season for the Cardinals, who outshot their opponents by a combined 305-174 margin while finishing with a 10-5-3 overall mark.
"We started the season strong and finished it strong," said Plattsburgh State head coach Karen Waterbury.
The Cardinals came out strong Wednesday and took a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the contest.
Kristie Pageau took a cross from Lindsey Keyser and scored from close range to give Plattsburgh State the lead at 7:34 of the first half. Radigan then made it 2-0 on a penalty kick with 10:10 gone.
Brittany Casey brought the Cadets (8-9-1) back to within a goal when she scored from in close at 31:34.
But Radigan tallied with just 27 seconds remaining in the half, with Danielle Wiemer assisting, to put the Cardinals back up by two, at 3-1.
"That was a great goal for us going into the half," Waterbury said.
Casey's second goal of the contest, off a corner kick, made it 3-2 with 13:01 gone in the second half.
"We stopped working at times today and let them back into the game twice," Waterbury said.
Plattsburgh State had some other scoring chances but couldn't apply the finishing touch until 22 seconds were left, when a Norwich defender slipped and Radigan took advantage by scoring from straight on.
"I kept waiting for us to get that fourth goal," Waterbury said. "We needed to be sharper in front of the net. They had some strikers who were dangerous.
"Liz stepped up for us and Lindsey (Keyser) also played well. We also got strong play from Emily (Riley) in the middle and Kaitlin (Collica), who was playing in her last game, on defense.
"We were shorthanded, including missing Helen (Giroux), who got hurt in practice yesterday, and Renee (Egan), who got hurt in our last game."
Plattsburgh State was credited with a 36-9 advantage in shots, and Alina Greiser made two saves for the Cardinals. Nicki Hunsicker made a career-high 18 stops for the Cadets.
"We hit their keeper (with shots) too often," Waterbury said.
