PLATTSBURGH — Beekmantown came within two points of knocking off powerhouse Plattsburgh High at last year's Section VII Gymnastics Championships, and on Saturday the Eagles knew it was close again heading into the last rotation.
Beekmantown went out and earned the day's best score on the floor exercise to claim the sectional title.
Mikaela Frechette won the floor exercise and took second in the all around to lead the Eagles to a score of 155.8. The Hornets, who had won eight straight Section VII championships, totaled 154.075.
"(Beekmantown) hasn't done it in a long time, so it was very exciting," Frechette said. Heading into the last event "we thought that we were going to get second, and then we just decided to give it our all. And we went out and ended up winning."
Peru placed third (148.575), and Ticonderoga was fourth (145.025).
Plattsburgh's Emy Russell finished first on the uneven parallel bars and the balance beam on her way to grabbing the all-around title with a 35.05.
The freshman performed a bars routine that she had only tried in practice the previous day. The routine had an increased difficulty, and it paid off as she scored 8.76.
"It put my score up by .5 if I did that routine, so I just wanted to try," Russell said. "I'm pleased with it."
On the Hornets' next rotation, the beam, Russell earned a 9.25, the highest score of the day in any event.
"I was really proud with beam because I had no wobbles. I don't know how, but I was really proud of that," she said.
Russell took second on the floor and vault.
The top three finishers in the all around qualified for the state meet in February, and the top three in each event (not including the all-around qualifiers) are also eligible.
Beekmantown was ahead by less than a point after three rotations. Frechette posted a 9.225 to win the floor, and the Eagles totaled 40.65 on the event. The beam and floor were Beekmantown's last two rotations, and first-year coach Jody Frechette said those are typically the Eagles' strongest disciplines.
Mikaela Frechette finished with an all-around score of 34.375, and fellow eighth-grader Alyssa Leonard took third with a 34.2.
"They both have the flu today, so it was a little hard for them," Jody Frechette said. "But they both came through strong, and I'm proud of them."
Mikaela Frechette, who missed the final regular-season meet, added third-places finishes on both the beam and vault Saturday despite still not feeling well.
"Early this morning I thought I was going to puke and stuff. I had a headache and everything," she said. "You try focusing on what you're doing and try to ignore that, but it's kind of hard sometimes."
Beekmantown's Emily Vasquez scored 32.7 to finish fourth in the all around.
Plattsburgh's Justin Curtis, who was also out sick earlier this week, won the vault with an 8.4.
Before the competition started, Blake Frechette and family members presented Ticonderoga's Jamie Patchett with the Stacey Frechette Memorial Award for sportsmanship.
