Gymnastics title on line with flu a concern

DID YOU KNOW?

You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

PLATTSBURGH — The flu could be the wild card in today's Section VII gymnastics championships at Plattsburgh High School.

Many area gymnasts, including some of the top names, have been battling the bug this week and no doubt will be feeling the effects today.

The uncertainty is enough to make any coach feel a bit queasy.

"This is my first year coaching and I think I am more nervous than they are," said Jody Frechette, whose Beekmantown Eagles won the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference championship for the first time in 10 years.

The Eagles are favored to add a sectional title today, but that could depend on the status of their two top gymnasts — Mikaela Frechette and Alyssa Leonard.

Frechette missed the final meet of the season Tuesday and just returned to practice Friday while Leonard was not at her best.

"Alyssa didn't feel well today. It was good to have Mikaela back, but she was a little weak, also," Frechette continued. "She practiced lightly. Hopefully, they'll be ready to go tomorrow (Saturday), but we have a couple of other girls who were not feeling well today."

Plattsburgh High, with its eight-year sectional reign in jeopardy today, also has issues. Justin Curtis, one of the Hornets' top gymnasts, missed a meet Tuesday with the flu and just returned to practice Friday.

"He was definitely weak, but we're hoping for the best," PHS Coach Janice Trudeau said. "We have a few other kids not feeling too well right now."

Leonard was the all-around champion last year, finishing with 33.945 points. She won the floor exercise and took first on the balance beam. Leonard also came in third on the uneven parallel bars.

Frechette finished third in all-around with a 31.225 total with a third in vaulting her best showing.

Curtis had an outstanding meet for PHS, helping the Hornets top the Eagles 153.00 to 151.025 for the team title. Curtis was second in vaulting and on the bars.

They are not the only high-scorers returning from last year's sectionals.

Peru's Shanice Washington, who was first on the bars with a 7.75 and fourth in all-around with a 30.86, is back and a strong candidate for all-around honors this year.

Beekmantown's Emily Vasquez, fifth in all-around with a 30.85, is also back, along with Plattsburgh's Carly Gardner, seventh with a 29.675.

In fact, most of the leading gymnasts from 2008 return. Nine of the top 10 scorers on the bars are back while seven out of 10 in vaulting and on the beam return. Even floor exercise returns six of the top-10 scorers.

State veterans Amanda Charlton and Chelsea Budwick lead Ticonderoga while freshman Joann Campbell and eighth-grader Devin Davis have made great strides this fall.

Lexi Trombley, Molly Lawliss, Kaitlyn Timmons and Kali Tummons also have been scoring well for Peru.

The meet will get under way with the traditional march-in of athletes at 1:20 p.m. Competition will begin at 1:30 in all four disciplines with teams rotating through the events.
