TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Sentinels closed out the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference gymnastics season on a high note Tuesday with a stunning 144.15 to 142.9 upset of the champion Beekmantown Eagles.

It was the first win of the season for the Sentinels and gives them a boost heading into Saturday's Section VII championships at Plattsburgh High School.

Beekmantown (7-2) was without flu-stricken Mikaela Frechette, but still received a big effort from Alyssa Leonard, who won all four events on her way to a 32.85 all-around score. Teammate Emily Vasquez was second with a 29.5.

Eighth-grader Devin Davis and seniors Jamie Patchett and Chelsea Budwick, in their final home meet, came up big for Ticonderoga. Davis took second in three events while Patchett had a 29.34 all-around and Budwick, a 28.9.

PLATTSBURGH — Emy Russell swept all four disciplines for host Plattsburgh High, but Peru came out on top with Shanice Washington leading the way.

Russell finished with a 33.75 all-around score after winning each event by two-tenths or more.

Washington, who posted a 31.9 all-events score, was backed up by Molly Lawliss (30.25), Karsyn O'Donnell (29.1) and Kaitlyn Timmons (28.2).

Peru's depth was particularly telling on the balance beam where the Indians registered four of the top six scores.

Plattsburgh's Carly Gardner, who was second in two events, had a 30.85 all-around.

The Hornets were without Justin Curtis, who missed the meet with the flu. Curtis is one of the top scorers in vault, bars and floor exercise.

Both teams finished the season 5-4 with Peru winning two of the three meets.
