PLATTSBURGH — So far, so good for the new-look Plattsburgh State men's hockey team.
The Cardinals broke loose for four goals in the third period Saturday night at the Stafford Ice Arena and pulled away to a 7-2 exhibition win over Concordia University.
Dylan Clarke led the way for the Cardinals with two goals and freshmen newcomers accounted for seven points.
"We're going to be an exciting team to watch this season," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery.
Peter Kaliscik and Clarke scored first-period goals to give Plattsburgh State a 2-0 lead.
But, Michael Blundon and Jesse Goodsell tallied power-play goals in the second period to pull the Stingers into a 2-all tie.
Freshman Chris Wieland then put Plattsburgh State ahead to stay, at 3-2, with 11:47 gone in the second.
Eric Satim, freshman Zach Hepler, Clarke and Phil Farrow added third-period goals.
"We learned a lot about the team tonight and who can do what," Emery said. "We're going to give everyone an opportunity to show what they are capable of.
"We'll find out more in our practices and the Red-White Game this coming weekend. We want to play hungry and smart. Our goal is to get a lot of pucks on net and get rebounds."
The Cardinals got their share of pucks on net Saturday with a 45-16 advantage in shots on goal.
Josh Leis, Raphael Rossy and Ryan Williams all played a period in net for Plattsburgh State and combined to stop 14 of 16 shots.
"I would have liked to have our goalies get tested more," Emery said.
Maxime Joyal and Roger Kennedy combined for 38 saves in net for the Stingers, with Kennedy allowing five of the goals.
The first official action in the 2009-10 season for the Cardinals will come Oct. 30-31 when they host Geneseo and Brockport to open up State University of New York Athletic Conference play.
