PLATTSBURGH — Consider what the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team lost off last year's 24-2-2 team.
Gone are the two goaltenders, one in particular, who combined for all of the Cardinals' wins.
Also gone from the roster are players who combined for 53 goals, 85 assists and 138 points.
"We did lose a lot of players," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "But, I'm not only concerned with the talent we lost, but also the leadership. We're looking for new people to step up in both those roles this year.
"Our losses, however, will be someone else's gains on the team. The question is 'who will it be'? Our primary goal is to win the SUNYAC championship. We have a lot of holes to fill, but we have a good core of players who can do it."
The defending State University of New York Athletic Conference champion Cardinals, who open their 2009-10 season tonight with a 7 p.m. exhibition game against Montreal's Concordia at the Stafford Ice Arena, do bring back some quality talent.
Plattsburgh State returns six of its top 10 scorers from a year ago in junior forward Dylan Clarke (16-23-39), senior foward Phil Farrow (12-26-38), junior forward Eric Satim (11-18-29), junior defenseman Ryan Corry (5-21-26), sophomore forward Kyle Kudroch (10-5-15) and senior forward Andrew Willock (6-8-14).
"We're returning some talent," Emery said. "Clarke was an All-American last year, and Satim, Farrow and Willock are also key players. But, they can't do it by themselves.
"We don't get the best players to come here, but we do get real good players. They need to buy into our system and discipline comes first."
Key performers gone up front are Joey Wilson, the team's leading scorer last season, and Riley Hill.
Other forwards returning include sophomore Vick Schlueter (5-5-10), sophomore Kyle Taylor (6-5-11), junior Dan Sliasis (4-10-14), sophomore Peter Kaliscik (0-3-3), sophomore Greg Fosso (0-1-1) and junior Kyle VanderMale (2-6-8).
Plattsburgh State has brought in six newcomers at forward, including Patrick Jobb, Ian Delong, Matt Bessing, Chris Wieland, Kyle Warneke and Jared Docking.
The Cardinals, however, need to replace all their goaltending, including Bryan Hince, who won all but two of Plattsburgh State's games a year ago.
Freshmen Raphael Rossy, Josh Leis and Ryan Williams are newcomers who will try to fill the void.
"Success starts with your goaltender," Emery said." Each player has an unbelievable opportunity to step in and be the No. 1 guy. Maybe, it will come down to having a No. 1 and No. 2 who will split time. But, no one is going to give the job to them — they have to earn it."
Plattsburgh State has 13 newcomers in all, including four on defense where the Cardinals got hit pretty hard.
Gone are standout Nick Rolls, Eric Greene, Ryan Burke and Ward Smith, and returning are Corry, sophomore Mike Kavanagh, senior Tom Breslin and sophomore Matty MacLeod. Freshman newcomers on the back line include Cody Adams, Paul Puglisi, Zach Hepler and Mike Grace.
"We do have a lot of newcomers on defense," said Emery. "And, we play a different system than most where they will have to adjust to."
The Cardinals, who had their season end last year with a 5-4 loss to Neumann in the NCAA Division III Tournament quarterfinals, won't be big, but will be fast.
"Because of the bigger rinks we play in, we want guys who can skate," Emery said. "After the Division I players are taken, we look to recruit speed. This is going to be one of our smaller teams, but we will be able to play tough.
"We need our team leaders to show the newcomers what our program is about."
The Cardinals officially open their 2009-10 season on Friday, Oct. 30, hosting Geneseo at 7 p.m. in SUNYAC play. Brockport comes to town the following evening.
Plattsburgh State will again play a competitive schedule, including the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout Nov. 27-28 at Norwich University and then hosting the Cardinal Classic on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 1-2.
