Looking Back (Oct. 12-18)

10 YEARS AGO (1999)
Nick Carte runs for 147 yards and 3 TDs in Peru's 39-22 win over AuSable Valley in a battle of unbeatens.

Adam Carter's 3 goals lead Saranac to a 3-2 upset of Northeastern Clinton in soccer.

Heather Brewer gets her 33rd career goal to become the all-time leading scorer in Saranac Lake girls' soccer.

Former NAC standout Amy Murphy scores 2 goals and adds an assist as Albany Pharmacy downs Clinton CC in the Northern Independents Conference title game.

David Merkel and Sam Reiter score in OT, giving PHS a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Seton Catholic.

20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Natalie Dembrosky scores 2 goals and Keene beats Willsboro 3-2 to join the Warriors in a first-place tie.

John Blades scores 5 goals and adds 3 assists to lead Elizabethtown-Lewis to a sweep of Crown Point and Keene in boys' soccer.

Franklin Academy of Malone, led by Chad Lawrence and Sue Bergh, sweep the Varsity A team titles in the Fayetteville-Manlius Cross-Country Invitational.

Sophomore Jenny Bruso, a recent JV call-up, scores both goals in Plattsburgh's 2-0 win over NAC in soccer.

Jamie Dumars, Corey Facteau and Matt Goette finish 1-2-3 for Peru as the Indians wrap up their fourth CVAC boys' cross-country title in five years.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Melina Higgins, Karen Gruendling and Lynn Ezero score as Peru beats Beekmantown 1-0 to take over the CVAC Div. I lead in girls' soccer.

Darin Cook scores the lone goal and Kevin McDonald makes 10 saves for his 6th shutout as unbeaten Chateaugay edges Parishville-Hopkinton 1-0.

Unbeaten Ticonderoga defeats St. John's 16-6 behind the defensive play of Dan Decker, Jim and John Reale, Brian and Bruce Thompson, Fred Granger, Darrin Rathbun, Darren Geiser and Jack Hills.

Wayne Drollette's 37-yard field goal with 2 seconds to play lifts Saranac over Moriah 26-25 while Mike Klugman boots a 21-yard field goal with 19 seconds showing to give PHS a 16-13 win over Saranac Lake.

Alexandra Bechard of Chazy takes a first and a third in the Regional Karate Championships in Boston.

30 YEARS AGO (1979)
George Brendler, in his 20th season of coaching soccer and 15th at Chazy, has three sons playing for him — Steve, John and Joe.

Dave Champagne III, age 18, finishes first out of more than 150 runners in the First Nurses Fund Run with a time of 28:22 for 5 miles.

Patty Gallagher, with 6 goals, leads Russell Sage field hockey in scoring while teammate Debbie Luff, another PHS product, has 2 goals.

Barb Sweeney scores from Casey Morgan to give Saranac Lake a 1-0 win over Gouverneur, lifting the Redskins into first place in NAC girls' soccer.

Jay Hooper scores twice and Denny Aubin and Gary Sherman once each as Elizabethtown-Lewis defeats Willsboro 4-1 to end the Warriors' three-year reign over MVAC soccer.

40 YEARS AGO (1969)
John Corker throws 2 TD passes to Chris Cringle and also runs for a score as the Plattsburgh State club football team defeats St. Michael's College 31-6.

Jim Tucker scores 2 goals while Zane Hathaway, Gil Belzile and John Drinkwine add one apiece as Willsboro beats Elizabethtown-Lewis 5-3 to snap the Lions' 23-game unbeaten streak.

Pete Neyenhouse runs for one score and hits Mike Davidson with a 34-yard TD toss as Peru whips Beekmantown 24-0 to stop the Eagles' winning streak at seven. Harry Duprey, Barry Devins and Satch Saunders also score for the Indians.

50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Randy Trahan, Larry Pombrio and Marshall Brothers score in Chazy's win over St. Mary's.

Randy Bridges gets 2 field goals in Willsboro's 4-3 soccer win over Westport.

Port Henry native Joe Gilbo throws a school record 4 TD passes in Springfield College's victory over Northeastern University.

Charley Todd scores 2 field goals as Mooers thumps Dannemora 7-0 in a battle of CCIL soccer unbeatens.

Rod Poissant runs for 4 touchdowns on his 18th birthday to lead MAI to a 51-0 drubbing of PHS.

60 YEARS AGO (1949)
Gary Brothers takes top honors in trap and Frank Reynolds, in skeet at the Plattsburgh Rod & Gun Club field day. Ernie Peryea wins the pistol match.

Former PHS star Abe Lakshin, captain of the Union College cross-country team, runs 5.26 miles in 25:35 to break the school's course record set in 1938.

Joe Rodriguez runs for 2 TDs and Joe Rotella adds one as Mineville defeats St. John's 19-6. Jim Sears hits Tony McMartin for a 40-yard TD for the Irish score.

Tom Giambruno tackles Pat Salerno in the end zone for a safety, lifting Plattsburgh High to a 15-13 win over Port Henry.

70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Beezie Bezon scoops up a fumble and runs 70 yards to score in Port Henry's 7-0 win over Lake Placid.

Joe Selesky runs for 5 touchdowns in Mineville's 44-0 win over Plattsburgh High.

Charlie Andrews and Lefty Fisher are the offensive sparkplugs while Art Baker, Pep Martin and Toots Benway lead the defense as the Plattsburgh Indians thump the Burlington Rangers 40-0.
