Girls' hockey playoff moved to Saturday
CHAZY — The first round Upstate New York High School Girls Hockey League playoff game scheduled for Friday night in Chazy has been moved to Saturday.

The Eagles, who won the regular season league championship with a 9-1-2 record (15-1-2 overall) and earned the top seed, will now host Saranac Lake, the eighth seed, Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Scotts Rink in Chazy.

On Friday night, the Chazy team will host a "Meet the Eagles," night at The Scotts Rink. The public is invited to meet the team and skate with the players in a public skating setting from 7 to 8 p.m.

Jonathyn Granger 3rd in 55-meter dash
PLATTSBURGH — Ticonderoga's Jonathyn Granger came in third in the boys' 55-meter dash in the Section VII Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday. The computer printout incorrectly listed Coleman Granger as placing third.

Jonathyn Granger, with two firsts and a third, led the Sentinels to the boys' team title with 26 points.

Winterfest curling deadline Thursday
WEST PLATTSBURGH — The deadline to register for the Winterfest curling competition is Thursday. The event will be part of the American Legion Post 1619 Winterfest this weekend with curling scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Teams of four will be paired Thursday at Post 1619. A few spots remain open. For more information, or to register, call Jamie, at 562-0183, or Post 1619, at 561-8706.

ADK cross-country ski outing canceled
PLATTSBURGH — The Algonquin Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) has canceled its cross-country ski trip to Loon Lake and Meacham Lake for Saturday.

The Wednesday Walk About Town is still on with the public invited to join. The group meets on the steps of city hall at 3 p.m.

Saranac boosters to meet tonight
SARANAC — The Saranac Booster Club will meet at 7 p.m. today in the High School Large Instruction Room. New members are always welcome.

NCCS seeks modified track coaches
CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton Central School District has the following coaching position available: boys and girls modified track.

Candidates are required to have CPR and first-aid certification or be willing to obtain the certificiates. For more information, contact Mrs. Gilroy, at 298-8592.

Farrell completes air jump school
PLATTSBURGH — Kevin Farrell, a sophomore midfielder for the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team and Reserve Officer Training Corps candidate, recently completed a three-week training school in Fort Benning, Ga. Farrell took the Basic Airborne Course with the 1st 507 Parachute Infantry Regiment Company, studying proper techniques to fall and jump from aircraft. He is qualified to join an airborne unit upon graduation.

A hotel, restaurant and tourism major, Farrell is from Mahopac High School.

Aprill to give talk on Canadian adventure
PLATTSBURGH — Press-Republican Outdoors columnist Dennis Aprill will give a slide show on his 2008 SUV trip over the Deh Cho Trail, a 1,800-mile trek through northern Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories of Canada for the Lake Champlain Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

On his journey, Aprill fished for large northern pike and Arctic grayling and photographed wood bison, caribou, moose and black bears.

The TU presentation will be Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Lodge Room, Gander Mountain store, Champlain Center in Plattsburgh. Everyone is invited.



28th Placid Loppet slated for Saturday
LAKE PLACID — The 28th-annual Lake Placid Loppet, presented by High Peaks Cyclery, cross-country ski races will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Ski Center.

The Lake Placid Loppet has established itself as one of the best events of its kind in the country. Over the past 27 years, thousands of skiers have enjoyed skiing and racing on the challenging Mt. Van Hoevenberg trails at the Olympic Sports Complex. The Lake Placid Loppet is a proud member of the American Ski Marathon Series.

This annual event, presented by High Peaks Cyclery in Lake Placid, attracts hundreds of skiers from across the United States and Canada. It consists of a 50 kilometer Loppet (30.1 miles) and a 25-kilometer Kort-Loppet (about 15 miles).

There will be classic technique and free technique race starts for both the 25K and 50K races. Bib pickup will run from 3-8 p.m. in the Olympic Sports Complex Cross-Country Lodge on Friday, Feb. 5, and on race day, Feb. 6, bib pick-up runs from 7-8:30 a.m. There is no race day registration. The 50K classic technique race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the 25K classic race at 9:15 a.m. The 50K free technique race starts at 10 a.m. and the 25K free technique race will follow at 10:15 a.m.

Each finisher will receive a commemorative pin, gold for the Loppet and silver for the Kort-Loppet. There will be an awards banquet at the Crowne Plaza, set to kick-off at 3 p.m. following the race; each participant will receive a ticket with their registration packet.

Cardinal squirts defeat Oswego, St. Albans
ALBANY — Gavin Giroux scored four goals in a span of just over six minutes Saturday to lead the Junior Cardinal squirts to a 9-0 victory over the Oswego Pirates in Albany. Giroux also had two assists while Josh McCauley chipped in with three goals and an assist.

Kurtis Olsen added a goal and two assists while Paul Fine-Lease completed the scoring. Chase Bedore and Brendan Whalen each picked up two assists with Luke Carpenter and Christian Thomas getting one apiece. Cole Harvey made 15 saves for the shutout.

On Sunday, the Cardinals skated to a 6-1 win over St Albans at the Ameri-Can Sports Center in Plattsburgh. Several good passing plays lead to four first period goals.

J.B. Chapin netted two goals to lead the Cardinals while Chase Bedore, playing his first game as a winger, added a goal and played well at both ends of the ice.

Gavin Giroux, Luke Carpenter and Christian Thomas rounded out the scoring. Olsen, Giroux, Thomas and Whalen added assists.

Cole Harvey, playing his best hockey of the season, recorded 11 saves for the victory.
