PLATTSBURGH — Lake Champlain, and Plattsburgh, will host two more FLW bass tournaments this week on the heels of last weekend's Bassmaster Northern Open.

The $6.5 million Stren Series will be contested Aug. 27-29 with as many as 400 pros and co-anglers competing in the third Northern Division tournament of the season for top awards of $65,000 and $30,000, respectively.

College anglers also will descend on the area for The National Guard FLW College Fishing bass tournament Saturday. National Guard FLW College Fishing is the country's largest tournament fishing competition for college bass clubs where clubs compete for scholarships and prizes and a chance to compete in the $2.5 million Forrest Wood Cup in 2010.

Team Kellogg's pro Dave Lefebre, who placed sixth in July at the Walmart FLW Tour event held on Lake Champlain, is looking forward to returning for the Stren Series.

"It's one of my favorite places to fish," Lefebre said. "You can't go at a bad time, the fishing is good all of the time, the lake is chock-ful of fish."

Lefebre believes that the fish will have settled in to summer patterns now and be schooled-up. "Once you find a good hole and catch one, you should catch a bunch!" he added.

Weigh-ins will be held at Dock Street Landing beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

3 PSU teams entered

The National Guard FLW College Fishing circuit will stage its third Northern Division event of the season Saturday. The top five teams from each of the four qualifying events in a division (a total of 20 teams) will advance to a three-day, televised National Guard FLW College Fishing Regional Championship with a shot at advancing to the national championships.

Two Plattsburgh State teams have already qualified for the regional championships. Mike Flynn and Chris Kinney-Hermes came in third in the June 27 opener on the Potomac River while Mitchell Davis and Scott Harrington finished in fourth at 1000 Islands.

Three PSU teams are entered thus far for Saturday's tourney on Lake Champlain — Flynn and Hermes, Spencer Oliver and Jason Leewe and Christopher Benninger and Randall Hill.

Weigh-ins will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Plattsburgh Boat Basin.

Full-time students enrolled in four year colleges or universities are eligible to participate in the events. Schools can send two-person teams to each of the four qualifying events in their division, with each event limited to a maximum of 40 teams.

Each team has the opportunity to win $10,000 for first and $2,000 through fifth place. Prize money is split evenly between the winning team's club and the school they represent. The tournaments are free to enter, boats and drivers are provided and all collegiate teams receive a travel allowance.
