Cardinals fall to Twins rookies

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Gulf Coast League Twins, the rookie team for the Minnesota Twins, pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday and defeated Plattsburgh State, 3-2, in an exhibition game on Thursday.

The Twins scored single runs in the first, seven and ninth innings, while the Cardinals, using wooden bats for the first time this season, tallied one in the fourth inning and one in the fifth.

In the fourth, Anthony Presto singled, took second on Danny Roeser's sacrifice bunt, went to third on Donny Coolidge's single and scored on the back end of a double steal.

In the fifth, Pat Shaughnessy reached on an error and eventually scored on Greg Larnerd's infield grounder.

Andy Gooch accounted for two of the five hits for Plattsburgh State.

The Cardinals used eight pitchers — Matt O'Leary in the first, Dan Tracy in the second, Tyler Greene in the fourth, Brian Burns in the fifth, Matt Seymour in the sixth, Casey Mohrien in the seventh, Justin Besaw in the eighth, and Roeser in the ninth.

Matt Burns caught five innings, followed by David Russo in the sixth and Brandon Cross in the ninth.

"It was a good experience," said Plattsburgh State head coach Kris Doorey. "Joe Nathan came over and hung out with us for a couple of innings.

"(Former Minnesota Twins manager) Tom Kelly was there and told us that we have a fundamentally sound team that we should be proud of. And, Paul Molitor was on another field, but stopped and signed autographs for us."

The Cardinals are back on the diamond today with a doubleheader against Minnesota-Morris at 10 a.m.
