CLERMONT, Fla. — The Plattsburgh State softball team earned its day off today.
The Cardinals played two extra-inning games Tuesday. They rallied to beat Bethany 4-3 in eight and then fell to Ithaca 12-5 in nine.
Plattsburgh State (6-2) is off today before resuming its schedule at the NTC Spring Games against Frostburg State and Berry Thursday.
The Cardinals scored on an error in the fifth inning against Bethany, and then Amy Woo drove in a run with two outs in the sixth to tie it, 2-2.
Diana Garces and Erin Florkiewicz each hit an RBI double in the eighth to put the Cardinals up by two. Then Plattsburgh State held Bethany to one run in the bottom of the inning.
"We had a rough start in terms of hitting — we had a hard time adjusting to their pitcher — and they jumped out on us," Plattsburgh State coach Stephanie Zweig said. "We're going to have to get better at being able to jump on teams and take advantage from the beginning, but it says a lot that we can come back and still win games.
"We've kind of done a little of everything so far. No team has beaten us in seven innings, so that's a good thing for us."
Tanya Fedyshyn pitched the last 2⅓ innings and earned the win. Freshman Ashley Marshall, who started the game, still hasn't suffered a loss.
Plattsburgh State's Danielle Gjergji went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Florkiewicz and Nicole McKee both had two hits.
In the afternoon, Ithaca's Brittany Lillie hit a 3-run homer in the fifth, and then Plattsburgh State tied it with three runs in the sixth. Both teams scored once in the eighth, and then the Bombers used a string of five consecutive hits to break it open in the top of the ninth.
