Waldron strikes back with vengeance

Miners rebound after Expos hand Lyon Mountain first loss; Padres, Cards sweep

PLATTSBURGH — The Lyon Mountain Miners tasted defeat for the first time this season in the first game of a Champlain Valley Baseball League showdown against the Meron's Expos at South Acres Field Sunday.

David Waldron, however, made sure the Miners got a split on the day.

Waldron clubbed four home runs, which is believed to be a CVBL single game record, and drove in 11 runs in Game 2 as the first-place Miners (7-1) recorded a 15-4 win following an 10-7 loss in Game 1.

Waldron had a trio of three-run homers and one two-run shot.

Kyle Kowalowski added two doubles and a home run of his own in the second game and winning pitcher Justin Besaw, who went the distance, added two hits.

Lyon Mountain held a 5-4 lead before scoring three runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Pat Shaughnessy paced the Expos (5-3) with three hits, while Nick Lamica and Andy Gooch each added two. Shaughnessy and Lamica each hit a two-run homer.

In the first game, the Expos trailed 5-0 before breaking loose for seven runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. Justin Mahan's three-run homer got Meron's started in the second frame.

Shaughnessy went three-for-three, while Gooch was two-for-two, with two doubles, and both Casey Brighton and Cliff Conners two hits each.

Billy Davis went the route to pick up the pitching win.

Jerry Kowalowski was the only Lyon Mountain player with two or more hits in the game as he finished with two singles and a homer.

Keysor struck out 12 and allowed only one hit — a RBI double in the fifth inning to James McIntosh. Lamora, meanwhile, fanned four and surrendered five hits.

All four runs scored in the game were unearned. The Timberjaxx opened the scoring in the top of the fifth and the Padres came back with three in the bottom half.
