Change of course for Tupper Lake 9-Miler
TUPPER LAKE — The Adirondack Watershed Alliance has announced a change of course for the 2010 Tupper Lake 9-Mile canoe, kayak and guideboat races to be held June 5.
The event usually starts at the Raquette River Fishing Access Site on Route 3 / 30 east of Tupper Lake and finishes at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. Due to significant construction at the Crusher site, the event has been moved entirely to the Rod and Gun Club.
The course will still be paddler friendly, with no carries and a circular course across Simond Pond to the cut to the Raquette River where paddlers will head up stream to a turn around marker before heading down stream past the cut off and around to the Route 30 bridge where they will turn to the left back to the Rod and Gun Club.
Paddlers can register from 8:00 to 9:30 the morning of the event. First start is 10:00 AM. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in numerous categories.

Strength, conditioning camp has openings
PLATTSBURGH — J&B's Strength and Conditioning has openings for its summer camps at CV Fitness. Camp dates are Monday through Thursday for the weeks beginning June 28, July 5, July 12 and July 19, July 26 and Aug. 2.
Sessions begin either at 8 or 9:15 a.m. and run for an hour and a half. Athletes ranging from age 9 to college may join for any or all of the six weeks of training. The camp focuses on proper lifting technique, speed training and core strength including power lifting to help in sports performance in all aspects of sports. Athletes from all sport venues are encouraged to attend. The camp also includes techniques for injury prevention.

Cardinals to host TC boys hoop camp
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's basketball program will host its annual TC Skills boys basketball camp on campus at Memorial Hall. The camp is for boys ages 8-17 and will run from Monday, June 28 to Thursday, July 1.
The camp will be directed by head coach Tom Curle and associate head coach Cameron Conover and have members of the team as counselors.

Piller, Duprey best in 10-mile bike trial
POINT AU ROCHE — Jack Piller placed first in the weekly 10-mile bicycle time trial Wednesday, posting a time of 23:48. He was followed by Mary Duprey, 24:38 (the first female) and Jeff McLane 24:41. Alicia Chase was the second female with a time of 28:28, followed by Sabine Amoriell in at 29:52.
The fourth event of the season drew 17 cyclists who rode under WNW winds.
The trials are open to all novice and experienced riders, road bikes or mountain bikes. Helmets are mandatory and all riders must obey the rules of the road. Registration starts around 5:30 p.m. with the first rider going out at 6 p.m. Riders interested in the 25-mile event should be prepared to start between 5:30-5:45.
America's Boating Course next weekend
PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, the world's largest boating safety education organization, will be conducting America's Boating Course, on Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6 at the Lodge at Gander Mountain Sports in the Champlain Center Mall.
The course will be approximately 8 hours in length and run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday with a break for lunch each day.
Included in the course will be boating safety rules and procedures, navigation rules, basic boat handling, coping with adverse conditions and emergency situations, communications afloat, trailering, personal water craft operation, state and federal regulations and more. It is a NASABLA-approved course and will satisfy the boating education requirements of both New York and Vermont as well as the Canadian federal requirements.
Although all US Power Squadron instructors are volunteers and are not paid for teaching boating safety courses there is a charge of $35 for books and materials. 5K Run/Walk to be held June 5
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Stafford Middle School FSO will be holding its 6th Annual 5K Run and Mile Walk Saturday, June 5. The event starts at 9 a.m., and sign-ups will be held between 8:15-8:45 a.m. at the middle school track. This is one of several fitness events to help battle childhood obesity — participants 19 years old and younger are free. The fee is $10 for people 20 and older. All participants will receive a T-shirt and running gloves.
John Norton new NYSEF alpine director
WILMINGTON — The New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) has announced that former NYSEF Coach, John Norton, will be returning to NYSEF, but this time as the Alpine Program Director at Whiteface Mountain.
Norton, has a lifetime of experience in Alpine skiing, and grew up racing through the NYSEF program. He has gained extensive experience as an Alpine Coach throughout the past decade. Norton, a graduate of Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., stayed on after graduation to serve as an assistant Alpine Coach where he worked with experienced racers.
Following a three-year stint, John was recruited by NYSEF to take a position as Head Women's Alpine Coach where he became intimately involved with all aspects of the race program including the administration of programs, travel plans, recruiting, race administration, and summer training camps.
In order to gain additional experience John moved on to the Green Mountain Valley School in Waitsfield, Vt. where he assumed the position of Alpine Women's Coach.

Week-long cycling tour to visit area
PLATTSBURGH — Velo Quebec, a non-profit cycling organization, will bring its cycling adventure Le Grand Tour to the area Aug. 7-13, as part of a week-long traveling vacation.
In preparation for the event, tourism partners in Warren, Washington, Essex and Clinton Counties are organizing accommodations and entertainment in each of cyclists' destinations to help provide a memorable experience and encourage the cyclists to return with their families.
This year, Le Grand Tour is offering participants a journey along the Lakes to Locks Passage, a designated All-American Road in the collection of Scenic Byways, which brings to life the early nation building activities of the United States and Canada. Traveling a pre-determined route of approximately roughly 500 miles in a week, 40-75 miles a day, cyclists will follow a route steeped in history and scenic beauty through Lake George, Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River, to their ultimate destination in Montreal.
Seton honors Cosgro, Champagne
PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State men's hockey coach Bob Emery was the guest speaker Wednesday at the Seton Catholic 2010 Athletic Banquet.
Emery spoke about the value of the Catholic education he received growing up in Massachusetts, and on the positive impact it had on his life. He also stressed that as athletes, a player's will and desire is often more important than their skill level.
At the banquet, Seton Catholic presented the Gary Ryan Sportsmanship Award to Alexa Cosgro and Michael Champagne. Cosgro anchored the Lady Knights' defense in back-to-back trips to the New York State Soccer Final Four Tournament, while Champagne won two consecutive New York State Cross Country Championships.
Horse shows returning to Lake Placid
LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows are set to return to the village of Lake Placid June 29-July 4 and July 6-11. In addition to family activities, the two-week long horse show series features every level of competition from children under 6 competing in the Juliam Farm Lead Line division to Olympic veterans competing in the Grand Prix — the pinnacle of equestrian show-jumping competition.
The Lake Placid Horse Shows include two Grand Prix events — The $75,000 Hermès Grand Prix CSI 2* on Sunday, July 4 and the $75,000 Le Grand Prix Hermès CSI 2* on Saturday, July 10.
Following the $75,000 Le Grand Prix Hermès CSI 2*, the Richard and Diana Feldman Perpetual Challenge Trophy for Excellence is awarded to the rider who has won the most combined prize money in Lake Placid's two Grand Prix events.
The newest class being added to the schedule on Sunday, July 11 in the Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix Field is the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and this event is sure to become an instant favorite.
Soccer United U-19 girls win tourney
BETHLEHEM — The Soccer United U-19 girls captured first place in Bethlehem's 25th Anniversary Soccer Tournament last weekend.
Soccer United posted a 4-2 victory over Southern Vermont, a 1-1 tie with Bethlehem and a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Westenhook of Mass.
Team members are Alexis Bushey, Kaile Bushey, Dani Dayton, Chelsea LaRose, Ashley Leclerc, Emily Morris, Emma Nye, Kayla Rabideau, Jade Sayward, Shauni Trombly, Kiley Wilkins and guest players Lindsey Bushey, Ashley Carpenter and Nicole DeOrsey

Lakers 16 Gold girls' team goes 4-0
PLATTSBURGH — The Lake Champlain Lakers 16 Gold girls' AAU basketball team finished with a 4-0 record this past weekend in the Lakers Invitational.
Katrina Garrand scored 12 points and Nicole Shepler 10 in the Lakers' 51-20 win over Massena; Garrand 10 in a 37-15 victory over Sun Youth from Montreal; Chelsea Brooks 11, Brittany Marshall 10 and Alexis Coolidge eight in a 46-37 decision over Brookwood of Montreal; and Marshall 13, Garrand 10 and Brooks eight in a 47-23 win over the Whipple City Magic.
Meanwhile, the Lakers 16 Blue girls' AAU team ended up going 1-3 over the weekend in the event.
Meghan Strong and Emily Manchester each tallied seven points in the Lakers' 37-34 victory over the Northern Lites; Shepler 16 and Alex Casey seven in a 51-41 loss to the High Peaks Avalanche; Shepler 16 and both Strong and Olivia Carlsson seven in a 49-40 setback to the Upper Valley Raptors; and Shepler 10 and Manchester eight in a 44-30 loss to Sun Youth.
The Lakers will compete this coming weekend in Rhode Island in the Commotion by the Ocean Tournament.
Brunell grasshopper tourney July 24
ALTONA — The Second-Annual Terry Brunell Memorial Tournament will be held July 24 at Feinberg Park. The eight-team grasshopper tournament will begin at 9 a.m., and all teams are guaranteed at least two games. There will be no entry fee for teams.
There will be concession stands, 50-50s, T-shirt sales and a big ticket raffle.
All proceeds will go into a scholarship fund for two Northern Adirondack graduating seniors and will also help with any repairs or equipment Altona may need.

Cardinals' U16 girls 3-1 over weekend
PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac Cardinals U16 girls' basketball team went 3-1 in tournament action over the weekend.
The Cardinals defeated the Upper Valley Raptors 41-33 with Steph Linder scoring 13 points and Megan Bowman, 11. They fell to Whipple City 43-33 despite 12 points from Linder and 11 from Bowman.
Alicia Duquette tallied 15 and Bowman, 14, to lead the Cardinals to a 55-40 win over the Northern Lights.
The Cardinals (11-1) then beat Brookwood 45-35 with Linder netting 18 and Bowman, 9.
Laker U17 boys qualify for AAU nationals
SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Lake Champlain Laker Boys U17 team placed second out of 10 teams at the Adirondack LIVE National Qualifier in Saratoga Springs last weekend with an overall record of 4-2.
With the effort, the Lakers earned a spot in the AAU Nationals July 26-Aug. 1 in Orlando, Fla.
The Lakers went 3-1 in pool play earning the number 1 seed in their pool. They defeated Hoop Nation Black 74-59 with Devon Anderson scoring 20, Bo McKinley, 16, Tre Bucci, 13, and Malo Valerien, 12.
The Lakers then lost to the NY Storm 52-51 with Valerien tallying 16. The Lakers bounced back to defeat the CD Raptors 61-47. Anderson led the Lakers with 14, T.J. Burl added 12 and Kyle LaPoint, 10.
The Lakers then wrapped up pool play beating East Greenbush 60-33 with Anderson netting 17 and Brody Douglass, 12.
In the semifinals on Sunday, the Lakers defeated the US Hoopsters 68-51, Valerien and Anderson led the way with each, followed by Douglass with 13.
The Lakers earned another shot at Hoop Nation Black in the championship. They trailed 43-23 at the break, but rallied to fall 64-62. Valerien led the way with 25 points while Douglass tallied 14.
The Lakers will participate in the Gym Rat Challenge this weekend in Albany.
Volleyball academy, junior camp set

Grants available for athletes, groups
LAKE PLACID — The Adirondack Community Trust (ACT) is once again accepting applications for the Uihlein — Ironman Sports Fund of Lake Placid. A total of up to $15,000 in grants and scholarships is available.
The Uihlein—Ironman Sports Fund of Lake Placid provides program support to nonprofit sports organizations that expose area youth to summer and winter sports that foster our next generation of competitive athletes. It also provides grants to competitive young athletes with regional, national and international promise.
Based on the number and quality of applications, the Fund will distribute up to $15,000 in grants and scholarships. There are two application forms: one for individual scholarship awards and one for nonprofit sports organizations. The deadline is July 16.

A five-person advisory committee will review all submitted applications. A workshop to assist potential applicants will be held on Wednesday, June 15, from 7-8 p.m., pm at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, led by local Olympic biathlete Haley Johnson.

CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley Athletics Department has listed coaching vacancies for the 2010-2011 seasons.
Varsity, JV and modified positions are available for the following sports: football, boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' basketball, wrestling, boys' and girls' swimming, baseball, softball, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, volleyball, bowling, cross country, and cheerleading.

One-pitch coed softball tourney planned
BRUSHTON — The Brushton-Moira Booster Club will sponsor a one-pitch coed softball tournament July 10 at the Brushton-Moira American Legion.
Each team will consist of five women and five men; players must be at least 17 years old.
The tournament is limited to the first eight teams. Entey fee is $150 with payouts for first through third place.
There will also be a 13-16 year old division and the entry fee will be $100 with the field limited to the first four teams.

Area skaters help Shamrocks finish third
QUEBEC CITY — With the aid of three local players, the Vermont Shamrocks girls U12 hockey team finished in third place in the Challenge Coupe in Quebec City this past weekend.
Brielle Carnright (Cumberland Head, Plattsburgh Youth Hockey), Amy LoTemplio (Morrisonville, Plattsburgh Youth Hockey) and Katie Matott (Rouses Point, North Country Youth Hockey) all played well for the Shamrocks.
The Shamrocks defeated the Montreal Panthers 8-0 and Quebec City 4-1 and tied New Brunswick Vred Prospects 5-5 in round-robin play.
The 'Rocks trailed Vred 4-0 after the first period before storming back for the tie. LoTemplio scored a key goal in that game for Vermont.
In the quarter-finals, The Shamrocks defeated in-state rival Vermont Stars 2-1 in double overtime. In the semi-finals, the Shamrocks lost to Quebec City 1-0 in a shootout. Carnright was named player of the game for the semifinal match.
Spring football league alumni game June 6
MALONE — The Upstate New York Spring Football League will hold its first Section 7-10 Alumni Tackle Football Game on June 6, with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Franklin Academy.
The format will have alumni playing with varsity spring football players. A draft will be held prior to the game to achieve team balance. There will be no blitzing, man-to-man coverage or kickoff and punt returns.
Practice will be held June 2 at 6 p.m. on the FA bus garage field. All interested alumni should have girdles, mouth guards, cleats and a $75 entry fee. Players will be treated to a cookout after the game.
