PLATTSBURGH — Four Plattsburgh Cardinals pitchers combined to hold Airborne Speedway/Hockey Plus to one run in 14 innings Sunday as the Cardinals swept an 8-1 and 3-0 doubleheader in Champlain Valley Baseball League play at Lefty Wilson Field.
Tom Neale struck out nine in going the first five shutout innings for the Game 1 victory for the Cardinals (4-0).
Neale and Craig Bujold paced the Cardinals with two hits each, with Bujold getting a two-run single and Neale, a RBI single. Dustin Currier added a RBI double.
Jeff Norton had two of the five hits for the Padres (0-4), who trailed only 2-0 when Plattsburgh broke the game open with six runs in the fifth.
In the second game, Gary Duquette pitched four scoreless innings and Steve Burris went the final three for the win. Joey Painter pitched well for the Padres while taking the loss.
Bujold finished with two hits, including a two-run single in a three-run fifth for the Cardinals. Tom Jebb, Zeke Perras and Neale had the other hits for Plattsburgh.
Norton rapped a double for the Padres, while Painter and Shane Perrotte added singles.
Miners 6, T'jaxx 5 Miners 17, T'jaxx 7 (5)
LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners (4-0) survived a scare in the first game and then rolled to a victory in Game 2 over the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (1-3).
In the opener, the Miners held a 6-3 lead going into the top of the seventh when the Timberjaxx scored twice to pull to within one and had the tying run on second.
Winning pitcher David Waldron, who went the distance for the win with 10 strikeouts and four walks, then got a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.
Scott Baker and Jerry Kowalowski each had a single and double for Lyon Mountain. Jerry Kowalowski and Richard Chase, who rapped a two-run single, drove in two runs each.
D.J. Barber led the Fourth Ward with a single and triple, while Jimmy Knight added two hits and two RBI, and Tim Lafave, a triple. Matt Lamora went the route in taking the loss.
Then, in Game 2, Baker led the way for the Miners with two singles, a double and four RBI, while Joel Siskavich followed closely with two singles, a double and three RBI. Waldron, Nick Chase, Kyle Kowalowski and Tom Kowalowski all added two hits apiece.
Tristan McDonald paced the Timberjaxx with two triples and four RBI. Dave Shutts added a double and single.
Expos 13, A's 1 (5) Expos 15, A's 1 (5)
PLATTSBURGH — Ben Clark and Mark Passino homered twice and the Meron's Expos (2-2) rapped out eight home runs in all at South Acres Field in their sweep of the Fourth Ward A's (1-3).
In the opener, Passino went two-for-two, with a home run and three RBI, while Nick Lamica, Clark and Will Flynn also homered. Flynn's was a grand slam.
Josh Powers added a two-run double in support of winning pitcher Mike Bergman, who tossed four shutout innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
Jake Tolosky led the A's with two hits and Nick Brindisi chipped in with a double.
In Game 2, Clark finished four-for-four, with a double and home run, while Billy Davis went two-for-two, with a three-run homer, and Passino two hits, including a homer and four RBI.
Bergman had a two-run homer and single, while Cliff Conners contributed two hits and two RBI as Lamica fanned six in going the five innings for the pitching win.
Michael Howard accounted for two of the five hits for the A's.
