FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — AuSable Valley volleyball standout Alexandra Hoey competed in the International Championships July 22 through 26 as a member of the United States national team.
Nearly 100 boys and girls competed in the tournament, which featured teams from Canada, Israel, Italy, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the United States.
Hoey, a senior libero for AuSable Valley, also played for the 18-1 National team for club volleyball North Country Albany Juniors. She was the libero for the IREVA Youth (athletes born in 1992 and 1993) at Fort Lauderdale.
IREVA is the Iroquois Empire Volleyball Asscociation that encompasses most of New York. The region extends throughout upstate New York, the Albany area and west including Baldwinsville, Binghamton, and south to Middletown and Pine Bush regions.
Tryouts for the High Performance camps and travel team were held in three locations in the spring — Middletown, Albany, and Potsdam.
The tournament provided high-level, broad-based regional representation that gives competitors a sense of what to expect in future international play as part of the USA Volleyball pipeline.
Opening ceremonies celebrated the unparalleled success of USA Volleyball at the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing where the men won gold and the women claimed silver to go with gold medals for both beach teams.
Tayyiba Haneef-Park, a member of the silver-medal women's team, was the guest speaker.
The International Championships is also the only event for both boys' and girls' teams.
