GENESEO — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team had to overcome more then Geneseo Friday night.
Dylan Clarke's power-play goal 24 seconds into the third period broke a 2-all tie and put the Cardinals ahead to stay in a 4-3 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference play.
"It was a good win for us in a close game," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We had to win it in the third period.
"In addition, we had a lot of sickness going around and had players leave the game. We didn't know if some of the players would be able to play, and we had to make line-up changes at the last minute when they weren't able to. We had to overcome a lot of adversity tonight."
Clarke broke a goal-scoring slump when he gave Plattsburgh State (11-2-4, 7-1-1) a 3-2 lead in the opening minute of the third.
"It came on a breakaway off a great pass by (Andrew) Willock," Emery said. "Hopefully, it will get Clarke going."
Kyle Kudroch then put the Cardinals in front, 4-2, with an unassisted goal at the 4:41 mark.
Shortly after at 4:53, however, the Knights (7-10-1, 3-6) pulled to within one on Clint Olson's goal.
But, the Cardinals were able to hang on.
"Players like Cody Adams and Mike Kavanagh on defense were sick and gutted it out," Emery said.
Plattsburgh State grabbed a 2-0 lead in less than a minute span late in the first period. Dan Sliasis scored a power-play goal with the Cardinals skating on a five-on-three at 16:29 and Kavanagh made it 2-0 on a five-on-four powerplay at 17:16.
Geneseo, however, rallied for a 2-all tie in the second when Dan Brown tallied a power-play goal at 14:56 and then Ryan Bulach an even-strength marker at 18:58.
"Geneseo worked their tails off," Emery said. "We played really well in the first and third periods, but they took it to us in the second. They played with emotion and it showed.
"We were up, 2-0, when their goalie (Cory Gershon) made a highlight save on Clarke. Clarke had an open net and their goalie dove across and the puck hit his stick. If we go up, 3-0, at that time, it's a different game."
Plattsburgh State held a 36-31 shot advantage and went three-for-six on the powerplay. Ryan Williams made 28 saves in net for the Cardinals and Gershon stopped 32 shots for the Knights.
The Cardinals continue their road trip tonight at Brockport, which skated to a surprise 4-2 win over Potsdam on Friday night. In other SUNYAC action, league-leading Oswego crushed Buffalo State, 10-1, and Fredonia blanked Cortland, 5-0.
