PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Mariners were three outs away from opening their 2010 American Legion baseball season with a win Saturday.
But, the Meron's Expos, from the Champlain Valley Baseball League, rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh for a 7-6 victory at Lefty Wilson Field.
The Mariners held a 3-1 lead after one and carried that lead into the top of the fifth when the Expos scored three times to take a 4-3 advantage. Pat Shaughnessy hit the first of his two two-run homers to give Meron's the lead.
But, in the bottom of the fifth, the Mariners tallied three runs of their own to regain a 6-4 advantage. Will Flynn rapped a two-run homer and Cody Weaver had a two-out, RBI single to make it 6-4 Clinton County.
It stayed that way until the seventh when the Expos scored three runs off losing pitcher Josh Powers. Tory Bouyea walked, Shaughnessy rapped his second two-run homer to tie it, Billy Davis doubled, Mark Passino walked and Mike Bergman drove in the game-winning run with a single into right center.
Davis, who picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Cory Russell, set the Mariners down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
Shaughnessy and Davis led Meron's with three hits each, with Davis getting two doubles while Bouyea and Bergman each added a single and double. Cliff Conners chipped in with a double.
Cody Weaver accounted for two hits and two RBI for the Mariners, with Flynn homering and Frank Buksa doubling.
Matt Seymour allowed only one run in pitching the first four innings for Clinton County.
The Mariners are back on the diamond today when they host the T.C. Eagles (South Glens Falls) in a twinbill at Plattsburgh State's Chip Cummings Field.
