Cougars fall to Royals

SCHENECTADY — Turnovers went a long way in costing the Clinton Community College men's basketball team a win Thursday night.

Reece Jackson scored 29 points and Zach Edwards added 17 as Schenectady Community College edged out a 55-53 victory over the Cougars.

Chris Miller tossed in 22 points for the Cougars, while Vince Carter added 14 and Zach Basso nine.

Clinton held a 31-24 lead at the half before the Royals rallied after intermission.

"We played very hard and we did a decent job on the glass," Clinton head coach Kevin Daugherty said. "They didn't take the lead until two minutes we left. We held it for the first 38 minutes.

"But we had way too many turnovers — 21 — and you can't win close games with that many."

Clinton trailed by as many as three points in the final minute and had a chance to tie it at the end.

"With 12 seconds left, we had two good looks at tying it," Daugherty said. "But we missed both.

"It was a gutsy performance by our guys, and we were right there. It's a tough place to play. Turnovers down the stretch was what did us in."

Next up for the Cougars will be a 4 p.m. home game Saturday against Mohawk Valley Community College.

SCHENECTADY — Brittany Baker scored 22 points and Katie Simpson added 20 as Schenectady Community College pulled away from Clinton Community College.

The Cougars (11-4) held a 35-34 lead at the half, but the Royals outscored Clinton, 35-22, over the final 20 minutes of the contest.

"They had a great second half and we didn't," Clinton head coach Donna Dixon said. "We had our transition game going in the first half, but we weren't able to execute in the second half.

"We made a lot of mental mistakes. We went scoreless for four minutes from the nine-minute mark on, and they outscored us, 17-10, in the final 10 minutes. But what really hurt us was the mental mistakes."

Betsy Santoro added 16 points and Chris Volans nine for Schenectady.

Megan Riley led the Cougars with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three assists.

Emily Decker added 13 points, Jade Pellerin 11 points, Katrina Garrand eight points, Ruth Paul 10 rebounds and Kiyanna Edwards eight rebounds and five assists.

"Schenectady was much better than the first time we played them and I give them credit," Dixon said. "But we have to play good basketball for 40 minutes."

The Cougars return to the court at 2 p.m. Saturday when they host Mohawk Valley Community College.
