Track & field
Sophomore Lee Berube (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) of SUNY Geneseo placed 10th in the men's 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division III championships at Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. He was timed in 14:47.93. Berube was one of three Geneseo men to earn first team All-SUNYAC recognition for the spring.
Several former area high school track and field athletes competed at the New York State collegiate track and field championships held this past weekend at RPI University in Troy, New York.
Sophomore Wendy Pavlus (Tupper Lake/ Tupper Lake) of St. Lawrence University finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:33.7 and was also a member of the women's 4x800 relay team that finished second.
Sophomore Heidi Baumbach (Lake Placid/Lake Placid) of Ithaca College placed second to Pavlus in the 3000 meter steeplechase in a time of11:26.21 to help lead the Ithaca women to the overall team championship.
Freshman Corinne Becker (Saranac Lake/Saranac Lake) helped the St. Lawrence University 4x100 meter relay team to a sixth place finish and also placed 10th in the 100 meters at 13.5 seconds.
Sophomore Emily Palmer (Ticonderoga/Ticonderoga) running for St. Lawrence University placed 10th in the 100 meter hurdles.
Junior Kyle Devins (Peru/ AuSable Valley) helped lead the Ithaca men to the overall team title. Devins placed first in both the long 22' 5.5" and triple jumps 46' 2.5". Both jumps were ECAC qualifying jumps.
Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga/Ticonderoga) placed first in the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 4½ inches and second in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 10¼ inches.
Josh Leblanc (Saranac Lake/Saranac Lake) was a member of the St. Lawrence University winning 4x800-meter relay team. LeBlanc also placed 7th in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:02.25.
Baseball
Jordan Keysor recently completed his freshman season as a member of the Skidmore College Baseball Team. Skidmore broke the school record for wins finishing 30-15. They also won the Liberty League Tournament thus advancing to the NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals held in Auburn. The pitching staff finished with a team ERA of 2.88 which currently ranks #2 of the 359 Division III teams in the country
Keysor finished with a 1-1 record with 2 saves. He tied for the team lead in appearances with 15. In 25 2/3 innings Jordan recorded 27 strikeouts and finished the season with an ERA of 2.10 which was the 3rd best in the league.
Honors
Senior Cortney Poirier (Moira/Brushton-Moira) received the Maxcy-Molnar Award, presented annually to SUNY Potsdam's outstanding senior male and female athletes. Poirier (Moira/Bruston-Moira) was a member of the women's basketball team and is the program's all-time leading scorer.
She was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference First Team for women's basketball for the second consecutive year. Poirier averaged 17.7 points per game with team highs in steals (69), rebounds (159), and blocks (12). She was second on the team with 58 assists. Currently the Bears all-time leading scorer, Poirier scored a career-high 37 points in a January home win over New Paltz and had 13 games scoring 20 points or more.
Senior John Dreimiller (Ticonderoga/Ticonderoga) was among 60 Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) athletees named to the 2010 Liberty League Spring All-Academice Team. Honored student-athletes must have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20.
The Lyndon (Vt.) State Green and Gold Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Award, given to the top student-athletes in terms of GPA, were presented to senior Rebecca Irwin and junior Michael Muccilli, who compete for the Lyndon women's tennis and men's cross country teams, respectively.
Irwin, an Exercise Science major who resides in AuSable Forks, N.Y., currently holds a GPA of 3.84 on a scale of 4.0 and Muccilli, a Newton, N.J. native who is studying meteorology, has earned a GPA of 3.73in his three years at Lyndon.
