PLATTSBURGH — The road doesn't get any easier for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team.
Following a disappointing 4-1 loss at Norwich University on Tuesday, the Cardinals (9-2-2) are back at it today at 4 p.m. at nationally-ranked Elmira College in a non-league game.
"Only time will tell about the Norwich game," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We knew that it was going to be tough to beat Norwich at their place.
"This is probably the toughest week of the season for us and we'll see how we bounce back. We'll know more about our team."
The Soaring Eagles (10-3 overall, 6-0 ECAC West) are currently ranked sixth in the country in Division III.
"Elmira is a great team," Emery said. "It would be a good win for us if we get one there.
"They (Elmira) will come to play — come right at us — and it should be an exciting game to watch."
Elmira competed in the Oswego Pathfinder Classic this past weekend, skating to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the opening round before dropping a 3-1 decision to the host Lakers in the title contest.
It was the third meeting of the season between Elmira and top-ranked Oswego. The Soaring Eagles opened their season with a 7-2 loss at Oswego before posting a 2-1 decision over the Lakers the following night on the Soaring Eagles' home ice.
That is the only loss this season for Oswego.
Elmira had won nine games in a row prior to the loss last weekend to the Lakers.
Six Elmira players have 10 points or more on the season, led by sophomore forward Darcy Vaillancourt (8-11-19) and senior forward Rusty Masters (10-8-18). Senior Casey Tuttle has done the majority of the goaltending with a 9-2 record and 2.45 goals-against-average.
Emery is hoping some of his veterans, who did not play well against Norwich, will step up today.
"We're still a work in progress with all the freshmen we have," he said. "We have to look at the tapes of games, evaluate the team and try to improve. You can take more out of a loss in that respect.
"We do, however, need to get some of our guys who have of history of playing well to play better."
Emery gave the team Wednesday off before returning to practice on Thursday.
"We needed a mental health day off that had nothing to do with hockey," he said. "We had a great practice on Thursday and we're hoping for another great day of practice on Friday before we leave in the morning.
"We need to play hard against Elmira and get pucks to the net, something we didn't do against Norwich. Norwich's style of play is similar to ours and they're a difficult match-up for us."
