---- — BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Eagles served notice Monday night that they won’t give up the title without a fight.
The reigning Champlain Valley Athletic Conference gymnastics champions bounced back from last week’s loss to Peru, gaining revenge with a 154.15 to 153.35 victory over the Indians. The outcome left Beekmantown on top with a 3-1 record while Peru fell to 2-1. The Indians visit Plattsburgh High on Thursday with a chance to move into a first-place tie.
In any event, the Beekmantown-Peru battle for the CVAC crown is likely to go down to their third and final meeting on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Beekmantown.
The Eagles’ Alyssa Leonard once again dominated the competition as she did the week before in winning three events and posting a 33.5 all-around score. In the rematch, Leonard swept all four disciplines on her way to a 34.95 all-around total.
She was in a class by herself in floor exercise, winning by more than a point with a score of 9.4. She also trumped the competition on the balance beam with a 9.2, more than a point better than the runner-up.
Alexandra Brown, with four seconds, led Peru with a 32.0 all-around; however, the Indians were unable to overcome the loss of Molly Lawliss to a back injury. Lawliss had the third best all-around score (31.0) in the first meeting with Beekmantown. She is expected to return on Thursday.
