PERU — Mallory Honan scored two goals in the second half as Northeastern Clinton captured a 2-1 victory over Peru in girls’ Northern Soccer League play Friday.
The Cougars outshot the Indians 20-7 during the game, but Peru keeper Shannon Bombard was up to the task, turning away 11 shots.
Honan tallied her first goal at the 7:50 mark of the first half on an assist from Taylor Rabideau. Three minutes later she would score her second goal with Molly Roush collecting the assist.
The Indians’ team was struck with the flu and injuries that only afforded them 11 players for the game with no subs.
“It was just a battle to get on the field,” Peru coach Jackie Sullivan said. “Ashley Carpenter, Maddison Flynn, Kelly Neenan and Mary Mazzella played really well and kept our team together and motivated.”
Mazzella would add Peru’s lone goal late in the game with two and a half minutes left off a pass from Nicole Breton.
Christina Paolo captured the victory in net for the Cougars with six saves.
