SARANAC LAKE — Katrina Garrand tallied 18 points, dished out eight assists and had four steals to lead Clinton Community College over North Country Community College in women's college basketball Tuesday.
The Cougars (17-5) started out strong and held a 39-26 lead at the end of the first half.
"We came out strong," Clinton coach Donna Dixon said. "We were able to get to the rim in transition.
"North Country started making shots at the end of the half. They always seem to make a run. It was as close as eight in the second, but we made another dun and we were able to put it away."
Jade Pellerin led the Cougars in scoring with 19 points. Ruth Paul added 13 points and 14 rebounds while Ashley Whitty finished with 10 points.
Clinton as a team had 20 assists in the game.
"We were really able to get out in transition," Dixon said. "This was a great overall team effort on both offense and defense."
Ayanda Ntombela led all scorers with 23 points to pace the Saints. Justin Smith chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds while LaCandice Sanders tallied eight points and Steph Demarais had six rebounds.
"Ayanda really played well and got a lot of penetration," Saints coach Jerrad Dumont said. "We didn't hit a lot of outside shots which really hurt us."
The Cougars take on Jefferson at 5 p.m. Thursday at home.
North Country will host Schenectady at 1 p.m. Saturday.
