LYON MOUNTAIN — When the dust settled at the Big Ball Diamond Sunday, the Lyon Mountain Miners became the lone unbeaten team remaining in the Champlain Valley Baseball League and the hard-luck Airborne Speedway Padres remained in search of their first win.
The Miners (6-0) recorded a 6-5 win in Game 1 and a 14-11 decision in nine innings in Game 2 as the Padres have now lost three games by one run and another in extra innings so far this season.
In Game 1, the Miners erased a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the fifth. The Padres, however, came back to tie it before Lyon Mountain scored a run in the seventh to win it.
Justin Besaw, who picked up the pitching win in relief, singled, Dave Waldron singled and Scott Baker hit a sacrifice fly.
Right fielder Jerry Kowalowski then preserved the win with a nice lunging running catch near the line with two out and two runners on base.
Reilly Lawless was the lone Miner with two hits in the game.
Mark Eggleston, Chris Markwica, Frank Brogna and Eric Bell had two hits each for the Padres, with Brogna getting a double and Bell, two RBI. Jordan Keysor went the distance in taking the loss.
In Game 2, Nick Chase, who picked up the win in relief with five strikeouts in three innings, Jamie Juntunen and Kyle Kowalowski were the Miners' hitting stars.
Chase finished with five hits, including a home run, double and two RBI, while Juntunen added four hits, including a triple and double, and Kowalowski three hits.
The Padres forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh and it stayed that way until the Miners pushed across three in the ninth.
The Padres were led by Shane Perrotte with two singles and a triple, Jeff Norton two singles and a double, Brogna a single and two doubles, Bell two hits, Cory Trombley two hits and Eggleston a double.
The Padres had 17 hits in all, but hurt themselves defensively with six key errors.
