PLATTSBURGH — The Airborne Speedway Padres entered the Champlain Valley Baseball League playoffs as the No. 4 seed.
The Padres, however, have been the hottest team in postseason play.
Airborne Speedway will take on the second-seeded Lyon Mountain Miners at noon today in the first game of the best-of-3 championship series at Lefty Wilson Field. Today’s game is nine innings in regulation length.
The series moves to the Big Ball Diamond in Lyon Mountain next week for games two and three, if necessary.
The Padres are making their second trip in team history to the finals, while the Miners are no strangers to the championship series, making their fifth appearance in a row.
The Padres are 3-0 thus far in the postseason, including a 10-2 victory over the fifth-seeded Fourth Ward A’s in the quarterfinals and a 13-10 and 2-0 sweep of the top-seeded Meron’s Expos in the semifinals.
Last Sunday, Frank Brogna tossed a three-hit shutout to send the Padres into the finals. Jeff Norton’s two-out, 2-run double in the third inning off Billy Davis was the only scoring in the game.
The Miners, meanwhile, had a bye into the semifinals, where they outlasted the defending playoff champion Fourth Ward Cardinals, two games to one.
Lyon Mountain won by forfeit in the opening game before the Cardinals forced a third and deciding contest last Sunday.
But Kyle Kowalowski rapped out two triples and drove in two runs and Justin Besaw was the winning pitcher as Lyon Mountain recorded a 5-2 victory to advance to the finals.
