The Chazy boys' soccer team never lost a game all last season while going 20-0-2 overall and winning yet another NYSPHSAA Class D title.
The Eagles are going to be strong again, with a roster that has a solid nucleus of players returning.
Chazy's toughest competition in the Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference will likely come within its own MVAC Division I with the likes of Elizabethtown-Lewis and Willsboro.
Chazy
Sophomore forwards Kyle McCarthy and Brandon Laurin, who combined for 22 goals in the regular season, are back to lead the offense for the Eagles.
Chazy brings back seven starters, including junior midfielder Jordan Barriere, senior midfielder Kaleb Snide, sophomore sweeper Nathan Reynolds, senior defender John Tregan and junior goaltender Austin Santor.
Junior midfielder Hunter Dominy is a returner who is projected to start this year, as well as varsity newcomers Nelson Pelton, Hayden Guay and Michael Ryba.
The concern for the Eagles going in is having three new starters in the back.
Elizabethtown-Lewis
Numbers certainly won't be a problem this year for the Lions with 21 players on the roster. But, of the those 21, only three are seniors who experienced a lot of playing time on a team that went 12-3-2 overall a year ago.
A lot of underclassmen will need to step up to fill different roles. The skill level is high, however, and there is the potential of having starters change from game to game while competing in a tough division with the likes of Chazy and Willsboro.
E'town-Lewis returns four starters in seniors Cortland Mowery, Zack Denton and Timmy LaRock, along with junior Hunter Mowery.
KEENE
Even though Keene has several players returning with two years of varsity experience, the team is still a young one.
The Beavers bring back seven starters in all, including four seniors in goalie James Bell, midfielder Jamie Kaltenbach, defender Sam Earl and defender/midfielder Dylan Boyle.
Junior forward/midfielder Austin Holbrook, junior defender Brett Guerin and sophomore midfielder/defender Jack Van Wie also are back as starters.
But of the 13 players on the roster, there are three sophomores, two freshmen and two eighth-graders.
Schroon Lake
The Wildcats had their problems keeping up with the top teams in the MVAC Division I last season, but will be bolstered by the return of 10 starters.
Senior back Jeremy Tyrrell returns to lead the defense, which needs to be more disciplined this season.
Three other seniors return as starters in forward Lance Paradis, midfielder/defender Anthony Vanderwalker and defender Chris Veverka.
Among the juniors returning include goaltender Justin Wachowski and midfielders Matt Savarie, Ian Williams and Kyle DeVita.
Sophomore defender/midfielder Jeff Armstrong and forward Jesse Shaughnessy round out the starters back.
Westport
Graduation, injury and transfer took a toll of the Eagles, who return just three starters. Forward David Quaglietta and Midfielder Liam Davis will need to provide essential experience and leadership.
The third returning starter is sophomore Jack Newberry, who will be a key player for the Eagles in the midfield.
Eight players return in all to the varsity roster and there are seven newcomers. Six of the newcomers, however, are freshmen as Westport is young and needs to stay away from injuries to its key players.
Willsboro
Junior Clay Sherman (12-13-37) and seniors Alex Hamel (11-5-27) and Patrick Wells (7-4-18) are back to lead the offense for the Warriors, who hope to give Chazy and Elizabethtown-Lewis a battle in the MVAC Division I.
Juniors Nick Ball, Clayton Cross and Dakota Sayward will spearhead the defense.
Junior midfielder Brandon Bertrand and senior midfielder John Pollock return, giving Warriors eight veteran starters.
Willsboro has good varsity experience, with 10 players in all returning. The bench, however, is inexperienced and they will have to learn quickly in order to help out.
