MALONE — The speed of Kayla Kenyon nearly won it for Tupper Lake, but the experience of fifth-year player Brittany Marshall saved the day for Franklin Academy Tuesday in a Northern Athletic Conference girls' soccer opener.
Tupper Lake (0-1, 0-1) grabbed a quick 2-0 lead midway through the first half; however, Marshall answered with two goals and Katie Lavoie scored at 7:05 of the first overtime to give the Huskies the 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
"Tupper Lake really dominated the first half; they outshot us 9-2," Malone Coach Michele Wiggins said. "But we played much better the second half and the overtime with a 16-5 edge in shots."
Kenyon accounted for both Tupper Lake goals, at 11:57, from Tiarra Spencer, and at 23:02, from Madeson Lavigne.
"She (Kenyon) really hustles," Wiggins continued. "It seemed No. 9 (Kenyon) was all over the place the first half."
The Huskies got a huge goal just before halftime. Megan Tavernia crossed the ball inside to Marshall at the left of the penalty-kick line and the Huskie standout
ripped a shot to the far post to make it 2-1 at 38:27.
Marshall then showed plenty of hustle in scoring the tieing goal 13:27 into the second half. She beat the last defender and from just inside the 18, connected with a nice, high shot.
Lavoie's game-winner came off a wild scramble in front of the Tupper Lake net. Malone put three shots on goal before Lavoie found an opening.
Justina Cositore, Hailey Trim, Bridget Gravel, Marshall and Lavoie all had stellar efforts for the Huskies. Brianne Cositore also made some nice saves in goal for Malone.
Kelsie St. Louis was outstanding in goal for the Lumberjacks with 21 saves.

Chateaugay 2 Brushton-Moira 0
CHATEAUGAY — Raquel Fowler and Alexis Beach scored goals three minutes apart late in the first half to spur Chateaugay on to victory over Brushton-Moira.
Both Fowler and Beach were able to penetrate the box with Fowler scoring from the base line at 34:27 and Beach tallying from the right edge at 37:47. Fowler also assisted on Beach's goal.
The contest featured outstanding goalkeeping on both sides with Maykayla Fleury and Shelby Coleman combining for 10 saves to record the shutout while Emily Lapage had eight for Brushton-Moira.
"It was a good goalie battle with great saves from all three keepers," Chateaugay Coach Steve Lang said.
"There was a lot of back-and-forth play; just a good game, especially for the first one of the season."
Brianna Smith, Nikki Cook-Paige and Raquel Fowler had outstanding games for the Bulldogs (1-0-1, 1-0) while Coach Lang was impressed with the talent and overall effort of the Brushton-Moira girls (0-1, 0-1).
