Paul Smith's to host 6-team invitational

PAUL SMITHS — Nationally ranked Plattsburgh State will join perennial power St. Lawrence University today at Paul Smith's College for the largest collegiate cross-country meet ever held in the Adirondacks.

The North Country Invitational will get under way at 5 p.m. with 187 runners from six schools already preregistered as of Tuesday. Rounding out the field will be Clarkson University, SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam and Paul Smith's.

The annual meet began a few years ago at St. Lawrence University as a nice way for the North Country colleges to get together on a week night for a low key non-scoring race over a 5km distance. It originated as a quad meet, and then expanded to had five colleges, and with the addition of SUNY-Plattsburgh this year, making it a six-team field for the first time.

The start/finish will be in the center of the campus between the library and student center, and the runners will head out and back along the Lower St. Regis shoreline, and along the Adirondack Park Visitor's Interpretive Center trails. The variety of terrain and footing will present a challenging course, while the views of lakes, marshland, and forests will be outstanding.

It is expected that runners from the two nationally ranked teams of SLU and SUNY-Plattsburgh will be well ahead of the four remaining colleges that don't have indoor or outdoor track programs. Clarkson is annually one of the top programs in the state for colleges that don't feature indoor and outdoor track, while Paul Smith's College's men's program is moving steadily forward.

Most of Paul Smith's scoring members from the 2009 men's team are back, and with an additional 12 members, who either transferred in or arrived as freshmen battling to be among the top five scoring runners.

The women's team will struggle to maintain a stable roster of five members to score as a team, but by season's end, hopes to have a full roster for the Yankee Small College Conference Championships and USCAA Nationals.
