Malone Minor Hockey registration tonight

MALONE — The Malone Minor Hockey Association will hold registration tonight, from 7-9, and Sunday, from 1-5 p.m., at the Civic Center Arena.

Youths must pre-register with USA Hockey online prior to registering with the Malone Association. For more information, contact Chuck Dievendorf, at 483-0159.

Cederstrom rushes for 18 yards for Peru

PERU — Junior running back Alex Cederstrom carried 12 times for 18 yards in Peru's 9-0 loss to Gouverneur last Saturday in Northern Football Conference play. The totals were incorrectly attributed to Zane Bazzano.

Bowhunter class set for Port Henry

PORT HENRY — A bowhunter education class will be held Sept. 24, from 6-10 p.m., and Sept. 25 ,from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at Moriah Central School.

Barracks reschedules golf tournament

PLATTSBURGH — The Barracks has rescheduled the 10-4-4 golf tournament for Sept. 26, starting at 8:30 a.m. The format is for two-man teams with total handicap divided by 3.

On the par 3s, each player will play his own ball and both scores will count. The par 4s will be played as a scramble and the par 5s will be alternate shot.

Entry fee is $50 per team and includes skins. Non-members will be charged $25 for greens fee and cart. To enter, sign up at the Barracks or contact Mike Dodds, at 293-7568 or at Golf0069@aol.com.

Boating safety courses offered

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — Guidelines to safe boating are being offered again at two special classes this month by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

A course called "About Boating Safely" will be offered for two evenings on Sept.28-29 at the at the South Plattsburgh Fire Department. Each session is four hours, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will count as one complete 8-hour course. Certificates of completion will be awarded to participants after a brief exam.

The course satisfies New York State requirements for mandatory boater education for personal watercraft (PWC) operators. The course is offered and presented by Plattsburgh Flotilla 15-08, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The cost of the course is $30 per individual, which includes instruction and the About Boating Safely booklet.

Carver Classic set for Sept. 24

PLATTSBURGH — Bluff Point Golf Resort will hold the final Carver Classic of 2010 on Friday, Sept. 24 with tee times beginning around 11 a.m. through 1 p.m.

The Carver format is the first 8 holes scramble, second 8 holes bestball and the final 2 holes alternate shot. Handicaps are added together then divided by 3.

The cost is $70 per player, which covers greens fees, carts, tournament fee and skins.

Michelob Fall Classic set for Sept. 25

PLATTSBURGH — The Annual Bluff Point Michelob Golf Fall Classic will be held Saturday, Sept. 25 with tee times beginning around 10 a.m.

This year's format has a new twist. As always, it is for 3-man teams with a minimum team handicap of 30, with a maximum of 17 for any one player. It continues to be a 3 man scramble, however, this year on holes 5, 9 and 16, players will play their own ball with the best 2 of the 3 scores combined for the team score.

Only those players with confirmed handicaps are permitted. The cost is $125 per player, which includes $30 green fee and carts, and $95 to the tournament pool.

Final Chazy Lake horseshoe toss Sunday

CHAZY LAKE — The end-of-the-season Horseshoe Tournament at Chazy Lake Beach will be held at noon Sunday. Entry fee is $5 with cash prizes.

Moriah boosters' bottle drive Saturday

PORT HENRY — The Moriah 12th Man Football Boosters are having a bottle drive Saturday at the Moriah Central School bus garage, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Anyone wishing to have bottles picked up can call 942-5903, or drop them off at the school.

Course in sailing to begin Sept. 20

PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, the world's largest boating safety education organization, is offering "Sail 2009", an eight-week course in the science and techniques of sailing beginning Sept. 20.

The course, which will run from 6:30-9 p.m., each Monday evening, will be held at the Lodge at Gander Mountain Sports in the Champlain Center Mall in Plattsburgh.

The course is a complete sail course, beginning with basic boat designs, rigging and the science of sailing for the beginning sailor. The course then proceeds onto the physical aspects of sailing, steering and helmsmanship, handling of more difficult sailing conditions, sailing safety, navigation rules,and heavy weather sailing. Also included are tuning the rig, spinnaker handling, docking and anchoring and marlinespike seamanship.

The course will be taught by Michael Stephenson, Past Commander of the Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, who has had extensive sailing experience.

Although all US Power Squadron instructors are volunteers and are not paid for teaching there is a charge of $55 for books and materials.

Buddy Walk to include swim, chili cook-off

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Down Syndrome Association will host a special event Saturday, Sept. 18, in conjunction with its annual Buddy Walk, which will be held the following afternoon.

Karen Gaffney, a young woman with Down syndrome, will be making an 8.6-mile swim across Lake Champlain, culminating with a landing reception at the Plattsburgh City Beach at around 11:30 a.m. As part of this reception at the City Beach, there will be a chili cook-off, with prize money awarded in various categories. We are hoping that area civic and employee groups, as well as individual cooks, will participate in this chili cook off.

The event will be open to the first 12 entries, with the deadline to apply set for Sept. 11. To enter the chili cook-off and to receive the rules and application, send an email to AMHolleran@aol.com. For additional information, you are encouraged to call 563-9712.
