GOUVEUNEUR — Gouverneur Central catured its first ever victory over the Peru Indians Saturday at the St. Lawrence County and Gouverneur Fair Fairgrounds.
The Wildcats, despite getting called for a plethora of penalties, blanked Peru, 9-0, spoiling the coaching debut of Nick Damiani.
Peru had its best field position after recovering a fumble inside the 5-yard line on the Wildcats' first possession of the second half. Peru was then called for a penalty, nearly lost a fumble and missed a field goal attempt.
Later in the third quarter, Governeur's Jared Knowlton covered up a bad snap at the Peru 33-yard line. Zach Cummings used a 16-yard run to get inside the 10, but the Wildcats turned the ball over a down later near the goalline.
The Wildcats defense sacked Peru quarterback Ryan Kenny in the endzone for a 2-0 lead on a safety with 1:07 left in the third.
On their next drive, the Wildcats had a 30-yard run called back on a penalty and later lost nine yards because of poor blocking to force a punt.
With each team punting on their next series, Peru turned the ball over on downs at the 34-yard line, and Governeur's Levi Love made the most of a broken counter play later on the drive and scampered 15 yards to put his team up, 8-0. After Lucas Bulsiewicz's extra point kick, the Wildcats elected to use an onside kick, and Cummings recovered the ball.
Cummings had seven tackles and carried the ball 21 times for 81 yards. Love gained 30 yards on four attempts.
