CHAZY — The Beekmantown boys' soccer team held strong defensively Saturday night against Plattsburgh High School.
And, the Eagles finally prevailed, 3-1, in a shootout after the two teams battled scoreless through two halves and two sudden-death overtimes in the championship game of the Frankie Garrow Memorial Tournament.
The game officially goes into the book as a tie.
"It was a thrilling game," said Beekmantown head coach Tony Perez. "I know it goes into the books as a tie, but it feels like a win.
"Our defense held strong because Plattsburgh kept coming at us. Give credit to PHS — they have a great team. But, our players showed a lot of heart and I was proud of them."
Keon Jahanbakhsh, Zack Towle and Mark Price scored in the shootout for the Eagles (1-0-1), while Ethan Votraw was the only player to score for the Hornets (1-0-1).
The Hornets held a 20-4 advantage in shots, with Brett Smith making nine saves for Beekmantown and Chris Roenbeck three for PHS.
"Brett Smith played one of the best games of his career," Perez said. "They were controlling the midfield and were on the attack.
"Jahanbakhsh had a strong game at midfield for us and we had Towle playing all over. Ben Smith, Josh Perkins and Spencer Keable played well on defense.
"For them, Votraw was strong at midfield as always and Jordan Knight up front."

Barriere assisted on Nathan Reynolds' goal, which opened the scoring 12 minutes into the second stanza. Barriere then scored goals at the 16:00 and 21:00 marks.
Austin Santor was in net for the shutout with four saves and Jake Newman made 14 stops for the Bears. Chazy (1-1) held a one-sided 26-4 advantage in shots.
"We played better in the second half and possessed the ball better," said Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe. "It was a good step forward for us."
