PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team ended a dominating weekend at home Saturday with a 4-0 win over Southern Maine in the Cardinal Classic at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Complex.
The Cardinals, following up on a 5-0 victory over Lehman the day before, won the tournament championship by goal differential over Skidmore College, which also went 2-0 in the event.
"It was a good team effort and we were able to get two shutouts over the weekend," said Plattsburgh State head coach Chris Waterbury.
The Cardinals held a 2-0 lead at the half on goals by Mike Payne (24:05) and Stjepan Bandov (29:42) — his first goal at Plattsburgh State.
It could have been more, however.
"We were knocking at the door most of the first half," said Waterbury. "We had some extraordinary chances we weren't able to score on.
"We were up, 2-0, but it was still a little disappointing. When we got the second goal, we relaxed a little and didn't play that well over the last 10-12 minutes of the half."
The Cardinals made it 3-0 at the 59:28 mark when Pat Shaughnessy scored from in close off a Chris Taylor free kick. John LoGuirado then ended the scoring at 87:39, putting in Taylor's corner kick.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 22-2 shot advantage and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Andy Heighington made one save in recording the shutout.
The Cardinals allowed only four shots in the two tourney games, while getting a combined 62 shots of their own.
"Our offense still isn't in sync," Waterbury said. "But, our defense is so good. Our defense leads to our offense."
"They (Southern Maine) were dangerous on their set pieces. We shortened our bench a little today with the tournament championship on the line."
David Kreps turned away nine shots for Southern Maine (0-2).
Plattsburgh State's Bart Misiak was chosen as the tournament's Defensive Most Valuable Player. Midfielder Taylor and defenders Gurtej Dhillon and LoGuirato were Cardinals selected to the all-tournament team.
The Cardinals' next game is a non-leaguer Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Norwich University.
Skidmore 4
Lehman 0
Matt Kelsey, the offensive Most Valuable Player, scored two first-half goals and assisted on a second-half tally as the Thoroughbreds rolled to their victory.
Diego Reinero scored in the second half for Skidmore (3-0), while the fourth Thoroughbred marker was an own goal.
Skidmore held a 47-1 shot advantage with Steve Vasquez making one save for the shutout. Marcos Coto-Batres turned away 16 shots in net for Lehman (0-2).
