SARATOGA SPRINGS —
Kayla Rabideau made her first-career goal at Plattsburgh State a big one Saturday.
The former Northern Adirondack Central School standout scored with 3:08 gone in the second overtime to lift the Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the University of Scranton in the second round of the Skidmore Classic.
The Cardinals, following up on Thursday night's 2-0 win over the hosts, went 2-0 in the tourney to win the championship.
"It was a real good weekend for us," said Plattsburgh State head coach Karen Waterbury. "We played two quality opponents who went to the NCAA (Division III) Tournament last year.
"We were able to get another shutout today. Our back four and keeper played well. Emily LaLone came off the bench and worked well with Emily Riley at midfield.
"All the girls worked hard. To walk away with two wins down here showed the quality of leadership we were able to get."
Both teams had their chances to score in regulation, but it was in overtime where Plattsburgh State began getting the better of play.
The Cardinals outshot Scranton, 2-0, in the first overtime and then, 3-0, in the second.
Plattsburgh State finally broke through when Rabideau took a throw-in pass from Riley just outside the box on the side and sent a shot into the upper corner of the net.
"Kayla took a nice shot — it wasn't from a great angle, but she bent it in," said Waterbury. "It was a golden goal."
Plattsburgh State finished with an 18-11 advantage in shots. Alina Greiser was in net for the shutout with four saves and Caitlin Byrne made five stops for Scranton.
"We had a couple of good chances in regulation and they did as well where we made a couple of good saves," said Waterbury. "They were strong defensively — they blocked a lot of shots."
The Cardinals return home before heading back out on the road for a 4 p.m. non-league game on Tuesday at St. Lawrence University.
