AUBURN — Zac Eppler recorded his first coaching victory Saturday in Clinton Community College's sweep of Cayuga Community College in soccer.
The Clinton women improved to 2-1 with a 7-0 thrashing of the Spartans and then the men rolled to a 5-1 triumph to give first-year coach Eppler his initial win at Clinton.
Molly Bowen scored twice and added an assist to lead the Cougars with Chelsea LaRose and Brooke Waite each picking up a goal and an assist. Kim Dragoon, Katie McIntosh and Ashley Lamberton also scored for Clinton, which held a 50-0 edge in shots. Kelly Lucia was in net for the shutout.
"We started out really strong," CCC Coach Donna Dixon said. "It was very windy near the laek and we used it to our advantage to get some early looks."
Clinton grabbed a 3-0 lead by intermission with Bowen, Waite and Dragoon scoring.
"It was nice to get a lot of people in the scoring," Dixon continued, "and to possess the ball the way we did.
"Everybody played well. Shauni Trombley and Molly were strong in the midfield. We're going to need that kind of effort tomorrow (Sunday)."
Clinton moves on to play at Herkimer CC today.
"They (Herkimer) are very competitive; they're one of the top teams in the region," Dixon added.
The Lady Generals are 1-0-1 on the season.
Men get first victory
Kyle Knight scored three goals and Kyle Kirk and Dillion Diorio each added one to lead the Clinton men (1-3) to victory.
"It feels good (to win), especially coming off a hard loss on Thursday," said Eppler, referring to a 5-2 setback to Fulton-Montgomery in the Cougars' home opener.
"We played well tonight. We positioned ourselves better and moved the ball around much better, particularly in the second half."
Kirk, Knight and Diorio all scored to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead before halftime.
Justin LaVarnway made two saves in goal for the Cougars, who held a 24-3 advantage in shots.
Kyle Reynolds and Casey Letourneau stood out on defense while Kirk and Dioro played well up top for Clinton. Ricky Lee was strong in the middle.
"Hopefully, the momentum will carry over into tomorrow," Eppler went on.
The Herkimer Generals, off to a 2-1 start, are seven-time NJCAA champions in soccer.
