Cardinal runners sweep invitational

Plattsburgh State falls in women's volleyball opener

PLATTSBURGH — Mike Heymann (15:36) and Bobby Grim (15:42) placed first and second to lead the Plattsburgh State men's cross-country team to a first-place team finish on Saturday morning at the 29th Annual Cardinal Classic.

Heymann captured top individual honors for the third-straight year.

In addition to Heymann and Grim, Josh Mitchell (15:55), Ryan Millar (16:00), James Biondi (16:09) and Chris Martin (16:19) were among the top-10 finishers for the Cardinals. Freshman Adam Shearer (11th, 16:40) also scored points in the Plattsburgh win.

"The men ran a tactical race. Both Mike and Bobby paced our 3-5 runners through two miles and kicked hard the last mile," said Plattsburgh State head coach John Lynch. "We ran significantly faster than we did last weekend in our scrimmage."

Plattsburgh scored 18 points in the team standings, followed by Clarkson (48), Northern Lights TC (75) and Lion's Pride (110).

PSU women first

The 28th-ranked Plattsburgh State women's cross-country team had eight runners in the Top 10 to secure the Cardinal Classic title.

Stefanie Braun (18:51) was the top collegiate runner, finishing second. Plattsburgh's strong showing tallied 15 points to take team honors over Clarkson University (50).

Colleen Cotey (3rd, 19:37), Kelley Driscoll (4th, 19:38), Colleen Coon (5th, 19:42), Brittany Trahan (6th, 19:42), Amanda Schermerhorn (7th, 19:52) and Julia Warren (8th, 19:53) all scored points for the Cardinals on Saturday morning.

"The women ran phenomenal, and packed it together nicely. That was twice as many girls under 20 min over that course than we have ever had," said Lynch.

Sara Facteau (18:08), who ran unattached, earned top individual honors with a finish good for second-best all-time on the Rugar Woods course.

The Plattsburgh State men's and women's team are scheduled to race at the North Country Invitational, hosted by Paul Smith's, on Wednesday, September 8.

Women's volleyball drop openers

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Plattsburgh State showed its youth and inconsistent Saturday in dropping two matches in the Norwich Invitational in women's volleyball.

Plymouth (Vt.) State defeated the Cardinals 25-12, 25-17, 25-22 and host Norwich downed Plattsburgh 25-14, 25-18, 25-21.

"We were very inconsistent at the beginning," Plattsburgh Coach Dena O'Connell said. "We get down 5 or 6-1 and have to come back. And we made some mistakes a key points. That's something we have to overcome."

Theresa Lilly and Kayla Hoopes each had four kills with Andrea Kalfer credited with 13 digs. Abby Mell had three kills and Hilary Boyea, 16 sets.

Hoopes recorded six kills and Cat Darling, three, in the Norwich contest. Boyea finished with 14 sets and Abby Mell, two service aces. Kalfer had 13 digs.

"We never quit. We had a couple of injuries and a couple of girls who didn't play," O'Connell added.

"We ran a 5-1 (offense) and Hilary (Boyea) set the ball well. The younger kids picked it up at times, but they need to get more consistent."

The Cardinals return to Vermont on Thursday, playing St. Michael's College in Winooski. Plattsburgh will be at the North Country Invitational in Potsdam next weekend before opening the home schedule Sept. 14 with Clarkson University.
