CHAZY — The 2010 boys' high school soccer season started Thursday night with a battle of two of the projected top teams in the area.
David Carpenter scored the lone goal of the game and Plattsburgh High School defeated host Chazy, 1-0, in the opening round of the Frankie Garrow Memorial Tournament at George Brendler Field.
The Hornets will play Beekmantown, a 3-1 winner over Canton, in Saturday's 7 p.m. title game. Chazy takes on Canton at 5 p.m. in the third-place contest.
"It's a nice win for us," said PHS head coach Chris LaRose. "Chazy has a great team and are defending state champions. It says something for us to beat them on their field."
Carpenter tallied his first varsity goal at 21:36 of the first half.
"Ethan Votraw took a direct kick from 30 yards out and (Austin) Santor made a nice save," LaRose said. But, he couldn't control the rebound and Carpenter was there to score."
PHS finished with a 16-9 advantage in shots, with Chris Roenbeck making seven saves for the shutout. Santor ended up with 11 stops for the Eagles.
"Votraw controlled the midfield for us and Jordan Knight used his speed to put pressure on their defense," LaRose said. "Dylan Esposito, Mitch Kilkeary and Shea Crockett all played well on defense. We also went pretty deep and our bench played well.
"I also felt Brandon Laurin, Matt Gravelle, Jordan Barriere and Nathan Reynolds all played well for Chazy."
Beekmantown 3 Canton 1
Zack Towle scored two goals to help power the Eagles into the finals.
Towle took a thru ball from Mark Price and scored from just outside the 18 at 10:00 of the first half to put Beekmantown ahead to stay.
Jordhan Varin then gave Beekmantown a 2-0 advantage with a hard shot at 18:36.
Canton cut its deficit in half with 47 seconds remaining in the first half when Brandon Bartley tallied off a scramble following a direct kick.
But, Towle added his second goal of the game, 3:30 into the second half, to put the Eagles back up by two. Beekmantown goalie Brett Smith had a long punt that Varin headed to Towle.
The Eagles held a 21-6 shot advantage. Smith recorded five saves for Beekmantown and Jake Newman 10 for Canton.
"It was a nice overall team effort," said Beekmantown coach Tony Perez. "We passed the ball well and were able to control the midfield."
