Seton focus on long-range goal

PLATTSBURGH — Gary Ryan has been coaching football for a long time — 34 years to be exact.

The fact he still enjoys it so much helps him deal with the current situation at Seton Catholic.

"We have a really great group of kids," he said. "They work hard, they aren't a problem and they try to learn.

"It's a little bit of a crash course for them and, if they improve as the season goes on, there's a light at the end of the tunnel."

The Knights merged with Northern Adirondack last season to continue the football program and there are 22 players on this year's team, many of them from NAC.

Ryan knew what he was up against last season, having to go back to the very basics of the sport.

The Knights were winless, but they learned along the way.

It was supposed to be a little easier this year, but circumstances changed.

"We thought with the number of players we had coming back, we would have certain players with us, but they're not," he said. "And, those were players in the skilled positions, who were vital to us.

"We're in the same boat again. We have a number of underclassmen on the team and some upperclassmen who haven't played football before. We need to find some people who can move the football."

Offensively, the Knights will go with either Joe Bridgeman or Garrett McLean at quarterback, Bridgeman or McLean at tailback, Evan Bressette or Jon Baker at fullback, Eli Beaudin or Theo Brooks at split end, Kyle Brown or Brian Murray at tight end, and Bressette or Caleb Larson at flanker.

Around the line, it will be Mike Riley and Jon Schoonmaker at tackle, with Arthur Charette a back-up, Dustin Gardner and Ethan Bombard at guard, and Mark Ryan at center.

On the defensive side of the football, it shapes up as Peter Eastman, Bombard, Schoonmaker and Russell Noel on the line, Riley and Eli Viars at outside linebacker, and Gardner, Ryan and Scott Guerin at inside linebacker.

Bridgeman, McLean and Beaudin will man the secondary.

"We have most of our lines back from last year," Ryan said. "But, we're breaking in new people at the other positions.

"The key for us is for the older players on the team to step up and provide leadership. That's going to be important for us."

The Knights, who will compete in Class C with Saranac Lake and AuSable Valley, open their season Saturday afternoon at Canton.
