B'town has big shoes to fill

BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Eagles won't have to worry about a lack of fresh legs when they kick off their 2010 Class B football campaign Friday night against Plattsburgh High.

Entering this season, over half of the Eagles' 35-man roster is made up of players who hadn't stepped foot on the field for a varsity game until Beekmantown's scrimmage against Hudson Falls last Saturday.

Beekmantown graduated 19 players last spring — 13 who were starters in 2009.

Also, five other players from last season's roster didn't come out for the team, and another will miss the season due to injury.

"We're very inexperienced," Beekmantown coach Mark Haley said. "But this is a hard-working group, and they've been improving every day since we started."

If anyone can get newcomers used to the Eagles' schemes, it's Haley.

This season will be his 16th as head coach and his 32nd year involved with the program — a program that has basically been running the same system for as many years.

Haley does have some veteran help this year with standout quarterback Carter Frechette returning to call signals. Frechette tossed 12 touchdowns and only three interceptions as a sophomore last year, adding five rushing scores.

Frechette said he has been focusing on "the little stuff" this offseason, trying to improve his ability to get the ball down the field.

"I'm just working on bettering my mechanics," he said. "The speed of the game hasn't been too fast for me so far, so that's good."

As a junior, Frechette will take on more of a leadership role than he has in the past, using some things he picked up from a few 2010 graduates.

"Last year, I learned a lot from guys like Patrick and Jonathan Manor," Frechette said. "I just want to carry over what those veteran players did when leading the way last year."

Running backs Patrick Manor and Matt Durocher, who combined for 26 touchdowns and 1,671 yards on the ground a season ago, graduated along with receiver Evan Bull (177 yds, 5 TDs). The Manor brothers, Bull, Durocher and Jordan Deno were 3-year starters who will not be back.

Frechette said he still believes the Eagles will have a solid backfield, and he's excited to have one of his main targets in split end Luke Weaver back as a junior.

Weaver led Beekmantown in receiving yards last season with 290 on nine catches, adding four touchdowns.

"He's a big target down the field," Frechette said.

Nick Bushey, who is a team captain along with Frechette and OG-DE Matt Putnam, will play the tailback position with Seth Pelkey.

Haley looks for TE-DE Mason Taylor, along with Putnam and OG-DT Josh Schwartz, to help lead at their respective positions.

Tom Codding Jr. and Adam Stuart will play the inside linebacker positions, and Frechette will be at safety again this season.
