PLATTSBURGH — The Heuvelton softball team had five sophomores and a seventh grader on the field at one time Monday.
But the inexperience didn't show.
The Bulldogs held a lead, lost it, and gained it back in the seventh inning to defeat Crown Point, 8-7, in the NYSPHSAA Class D regional semifinals.
"They just wouldn't quit," Heuvelton coach Mark Henry said. "I'm just so proud of this team. They're so young, and it's incredible what they've been able to accomplish."
Crown Point never led until the bottom of the sixth inning when it scored four runs to take a 7-6 lead into the seventh inning.
Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for the Panthers, and Chelsea DuShane rapped an RBI single.
Crown Point's Alexandra Macey was hit by a pitch and moved to first to score another runner, and Ashley Morgan added an RBI single.
Another walked scored the final run of the inning.
Heuvelton responded in the top of the seventh with scores on a passed ball and an error, and it took only three Crown Point batters to close out the final stanza.
Sara Sloan, a converted catcher, struck out only five Crown Point batters but pitched to contact and let her defense do the work.
"She's done a great job for us," Henry said. "She threw strikes when we needed her to. She struggled in the sixth but threw a one-two-three in the seventh."
Crown Point's Lindsay Brace took the loss at the mound but played well enough to win, striking out 11 batters.
"She's the best pitcher we've faced," Henry said. "She throws hard and has a great mix."
Down 3-2, the Panthers flipped the momentum in their favor in the bottom of the fifth inning when Dushane and Macey made a great heads-up play.
While DuShane was on third base, Macey slowly attempted to advance from first to second, forcing a pickle and drawing the Heuvelton defense's attention.
DuShane took off for home and beat a Heuvelton attempt to throw her out, getting the inning's only score and seeing Macey still reach second.
DuShane went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double, and Macey added an RBI double and a single.
Crown Point's Brittney Foote also had two hits.
"They're a great team, there's no doubt about it," Henry said of Crown Point. "They hit the ball hard. We scored three early and they came back. It was just overall a great game."
Crown Point was led offensively by Sloan's two hits, which included a triple, and Jennifer Cougler's two RBI.
Heuvelton's Abbey Basford added two hits and an RBI, and teammate Hannah Thornhill also had two hits.
The Bulldogs will face Fort Ann Wednesday.
