Seeds mean little in tennis semifinals

PLATTSBURGH — Seeding clearly didn't mean a whole lot in the Section VII Class B team tennis semifinals Monday.

Only one top seed won, with the No. 1 Northeastern Clinton girls' team defeating No. 4 Saranac.

Meanwhile, Peru, the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 2 Beekmantown.

On the boys' side, No. 4 Plattsburgh High ousted top-seeded Northeastern Clinton, and No. 3 Beekmantown defeated No. 2 Saranac.

Boys

Plattsburgh High was undaunted against the top-seeded Cougars, who captured the regular-season title.

The Hornets won, 3-2, but not without a fight.

Adam Emery defeated Richie Collins in No. 1 singles but had to do so in three sets after Collins won the second, 6-1.

Chirag Patel and Chris Gray lost the first set in the No. 2 doubles to Adam Khater and Brandon Letourneau but won the next two sets, 6-0 and 6-1, to win.

Alex Racine fell to NCCS's Adam Jennett in the regular season but managed to win a close, two-set match against him Monday, 6-4, 6-4.

NCCS's Bobby Marks and McKenna Hunter edged Shea Crockett and Danny O'Halloran in No. 2 doubles after losing the first set.

They came back to win the second set, 6-4, and the third in a 7-5 tiebreaker.

Ryan Marks added the other win for the Cougars in No. 2 singles.

Beekmantown narrowly defeated Saranac, which went 6-1 during the regular season and featured doubles champions Shawn and Corey Bissonette.

The Eagles won both doubles matches. Charles Payson and Dylan Riley won No. 1, and Spencer Keable and Willis Reid-Breyette won the No. 2.

Eric Mitchell, the runner-up in the boys' singles championship, won the No. 2 singles match for Beekmantown.

Shawn Bissonette and Dylan Christopherson recorded singles wins for the Chiefs.

Beekmantown will host Plattsburgh High today in the final.

Girls

The Peru No. 1 doubles team of Abby Higgins and Samantha Banker came back after losing the first set to edge Krysten Koktowski and Alexandra Provost in the next two sets, 6-1 and 7-5, as the Indians defeated the Eagles, 3-2, to advance to the final against NCCS.

Peru's No. 2 doubles team of Katie Lawliss and Margaret Mitchell also won.

Section VII singles champion Stephanie Omlin won the No. 1 singles for the Indians.

Bailey Waterbury and Olivia Wyand won singles matches for the Eagles.

Northeastern Clinton was the only top seed to come through with a victory, sweeping Saranac, 5-0.

Alanna Cruz and Tori Duprey won singles matches in two sets.

Paige Southwick also won in two sets but had to win a tiebreaker in the first.

Kristen Langr and Erica Sorrell won the No. 1 doubles match. Lacie Hogle and Allie Cartier won No. 2.
