Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

PLATTSBURGH — Soccer's Bart Misiak and Stephanie Moberg of hockey were named Plattsburgh State Athletes of the Year Tuesday at the Athletic Department's year-end Senior Recognition and Awards Ceremony in the Angell College Center.

The athlete of the year and senior achievement awards were voted on by the coaching staff.

Misiak was selected the No. 1 choice on all but one ballot. The junior back was named to the NSCAA All-America First Team, All-East Region First Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, All-SUNYAC First Team and All-ECAC Upstate First Team.

He was also selected the player of the year by two organizations, the SUNYAC and ECAC Upstate (defensive). He anchored a defense that was the best in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, allowing just 18 goals in 20 contests. Misiak is from Mississauga, Ont. (St. Martin's Secondary).

Moberg was a unanimous pick. The senior forward from Saratoga Springs was the runner-up in the Laura Hurd Award voting as the nation's top player. The team co-captain led the Cardinals with career-highs of 25 goals and 43 points en route to Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division Player of the Year accolades. A three-time academic all-conference selection, she has been named to the first teams of both AHCA All-America and All-ECAC West in each of the past two seasons.

Luke Weidlein won the Male Senior Achievement award. The attackman from Seaford High is the men's lacrosse career leader in total points (253) and assists (126), becoming the 14th player in SUNYAC history to reach 200 points this season. The team co-captain has helped the Cardinals to their first 10-win season in program history at 11-6 overall. He was an all-conference choice as a junior after notching 43 goals and 70 points. He ended 2010 with a school-record 44 assists and 78 points.

The Female Senior Achievement award goes to Jenny Schaffhouser of cross country/track. She is believed to be the first female student-athlete in school history to compete at four NCAA Championships. The senior from Richford (Newark Valley HS) is three-time all-region performer, member of the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame and All-American. She is a three-time NCAA qualifier in track.

In addition, Athletics Academic Coordinator Michelle St. Onge revealed this year's class of Chi Alpha Sigma, which is a national honor society for college athletes. The criteria is that the individual attain junior/senior standing, be a team member at the varsity level, earn a minimum 3.40 cumulative grade-point average, and demonstrate good moral character and are endorsed by their coach.

The honorees include Jacquelyn Boyea (women's in-/outdoor track), Josh Bruno (men's basketball), Kara Buehler (women's hockey), Ryan Corry (men's hockey), Dan DeFrancesco (men's lacrosse), Victoria Germano (women's tennis), Helen Giroux (women's hockey/soccer), Steph Moon (women's hockey), Jen Paul (women's outdoor track/tennis), Emily Riley (women's soccer) and Dan Sliasas (men's hockey).

The Richard Semmler awards are earned by the graduating senior with the highest GPA. Baseball's Alex Read (Ottawa, Ont. / Sir Wilfred Laurier Secondary) is batting .467 in 15 games and will be a two-time Academic All-SUNYAC performer. He is a mathematics major. Kaitlin Collica, a center back from Baldwin High, was a three-year starter who twice captained the women's soccer team. A nursing major, she is a three-time All-SUNYAC pick and all-region player.
