Sapp leads Section VII nordic skiers

HONEOYE FALLS — Maile Sapp, a freshman at Beekmantown and a member of the Saranac Lake Ski Team, finished 10th in the 7.5-kilometer skate individual race Tuesday to earn a medal at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Nordic Championships. Also, Sapp has been named to the Mid-Atlantic Junior Olympic National Team, which will compete March 8-14 in Presque-Isle, Me.

Other Section VII nordic skiers and their times and places were: Elena Beideck, Saranac Lake, (19th, 28:56.5); Julie Bowler, Saranac Lake, (30th, 30:45.9); Hillary Pond, Saranac Lake, (31st, 30:47.7); Elise Mellor, Lake Placid, (43rd, 33:29.6); Harriet Pedersen, Saranac Lake, (45th, 34:24.9); Bailey Weightman, Beekmantown, (48th, 35:48.0); and Danielle Tuthill, Saranac Lake, (56th, 58:37.1). Overall, the Saranac Lake girls' team finished third.

In the boys' race, Judd Collier, Beekmantown/ Saranac Lake, was the top Section VII racer, finishing 13thwith a time of 31:02.9, followed by Lake Placid's Nick Stosiek (31st, 33:36.8); Saranac Lake's Kyle Murray ( 53rd, 40:15.7); Lake Placid's Matt Saulpaugh (54th, 40:21.6); Saranac Lake's Mike Tuthill, (55th, 40:48.7); and Saranac Lake's Evan Kline (56th, 41:51.3).

The 4x3km classic format relay races were held Feb. 24 at Bristol Mountain Nordic Ski Center. The girls' relay team of Sapp, Beideck, Bowler, and Pond finished in seventh place with a combined time of 56:36.7 while the team of Mellor, Tuthill, Weightman, and Pedersen came in 11th with a time of 1:06:13.2.

The boys' relay team, which included Collier, Stosiek, Tuthill and Saulpaugh, finished 11th with a time of 52:47.0.

Collier and Pond have qualified for the New York State team, which will be competing in the Eastern High School Championships in Gunstock, N.H. the weekend of March 13.
