PLATTSBURGH — Two days after capturing its fourth SUNYAC men's basketball title in five years, Plattsburgh State cleaned up in conference honors.

Tom Curle was named as the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the third time.

Errol Daniyan and Chris Ruiz were named as first-team selections. For Ruiz, it is the second straight year being named to the first team.

Steve Thomas made the second team and Carl Munnerlyn was an honorable mention.

The selections, released Monday, mark the fourth time in school history that four players have earned All-SUNYAC recognition.

"I'm sure it wasn't easy for the coaches even to vote, but I'm glad they recognized that all four (players) were vital to the success that we had, as was everyone else, but certainly all four of those kids were deserving of postseason recognition," Curle said.

Ruiz became Plattsburgh State's 12th 1,000th-point scorer and averaged a team-best 17.2 points per game. He saved some of his best for when it counted most, averaging 22 points and 9.7 rebounds in three conference tournament games.

"It's a privilege to get it a second year in a row," Ruiz said. "Thank God Errol got it, he was named to a team for the first time and he got first team. Now I'm really happy."

Daniyan posted career highs in points per game (15.1), rebounds per game (8.3) and field goal percentage (61.3).

"I'd like to thank Coach, he really pushed me," Daniyan said. "I thank my teammates and the whole coaching staff — they really put me in position to get that."

Ruiz and Daniyan, both juniors and starters in all 28 games, were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team.

Thomas, a junior transfer from Clinton Community College, took home MVP honors in the SUNYAC tournament. He averaged 17 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while dishing out 66 assists over the season.

Thomas finished second in the conference in free throw percentage (77.5), but made the most (145-for-187). He posted a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds in the SUNYAC title game. He was so dominant against Oneonta that Curle said afterward the team ran a give-and-go offense — give the ball to Thomas and get out of the way.

Munnerlyn, a junior transfer from Fulton-Montgomery Community College, averaged 11.6 points per game. The sharp-shooting guard went 44-for-96 from the 3-point line (45.8 percent), third best in program history.

"It's kind of like being the sixth man for most of the season and it feels good to get a merit like that, first year in the conference — I'm very excited about that," Munnerlyn said.

The Cardinals (21-7) posted their third 20-win season in school history, all of which have come under Curle's watch. He has a 126-70 record as Plattsburgh State's coach.

"I'd really like it to be considered a coaching staff of the year (award)," Curle said. "Cameron Conover was vital to the success of the program and it's not coincidence that I have won three, but he's been my assistant all three years."

Plattsburgh State will host SUNY Institute of Technology in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament Friday.

WOMEN
Junior forward Taylor Amarando was the lone All-SUNYAC selection for the women's team.

Amarando was named as an honorable mention and led her team in most categories, including points per game (14.7) and rebounds per game (7.4).
