10 YEARS AGO (2000)
MacKenzie Patnode scores 22 points and Chateaugay beats Harrisville 56-36 to win its first Section X girls' basketball championship. The boys, led by Nate Bilow and Jason LaPlante, defeat Hermon-DeKalb 64-58, to make it a Class D sweep for the Bulldogs.

Brian Pelkey scores 10 of his 28 points in overtime, leading Crown Point to a 65-61 win over Westport for the Section VII Class D crown. Dorothy Albright sparks the Westport girls to a 50-33 win over Indian Lake in the final.

Brad Manor scores 21 points to spur NAC to a 60-39 win over Tupper Lake for the Class C crown while Miranda Perras nets 18 as NCCS tops Seton Catholic 64-44 for the girls' title.

Kristin Moore scores 15 and grabs 11 rebounds as PHS bests Peru 46-36 for its first section title in 11 years. Josh Brooks nets 14 as Saranac tops Peru 61-47 for the boys' Class B crown.

Max Rock, Steve Bonville, Scott Perry, Ron Foster and Jeremy Calkins win weight classes as Peru nips defending champ NAC 180-177½ to win the Section VII wrestling crown.

Cliff Conners scores in the second overtime to give PHS a 3-2 win over Lake Placid and the Section VII Div. II championship in hockey.

20 YEARS AGO (1990)
Angel Facteau scores 12 points and Andrea Light, 11, as Saranac upsets Moriah 44-33 in the basketball sectionals.

Jamie Rockhill tallies 18 points and Rick Merrill, 15, to lead Ticonderoga to a 77-65 upset of NAC in the boys' sectionals.

Saranac Lake's Shannon Maloney captures the golf in giant slalom and combined and adds a silver in the slalom at the New York State High School alpine skiing championships.

Kelly Barnes scores 21 points to become the first Chateaugay girl to reach 1,000 points for her basketball career.

Scott Miller is 12 for 14 from the line, including 6 for 6 over the last 1:41, to give PHS a 72-71 win over Beekmantown in a Class B semifinal. The Hornets overcome 28 points from Neil Stevens.

Jeremy Dubay scores 25 points — 6 in the last 2 minutes — as Seton Catholic rallies past Peru 52-45. Wes Burts leads the Indians with 14.



25 YEARS AGO (1985)

Roy Ebersole, Wayne St. Denis and Harry Reed lead PHS to a 56-41 victory over Ticonderoga, ending the Sentinels' 3-year CVAC reign.

Malone trooper Jeff Jost pilots his 4-man bobsled to the World Cup title, becoming the first American to win a major bobsled crown in 26 years.

Matt Parker fires is 32 points, leading Indian Lake to a 55-51 upset of favored Dannemora in the first round of the Class D playoffs.

Michel Valliere makes 38 saves and Pete DeArmas scores on a deflection at 14:15 and an empty-netter as Plattsburgh State beats host Oswego 5-3 to win the SUNYAC crown.

30 YEARS AGO (1980)

The U.S. Olympic team, led by five-time gold-medalist Eric Heiden and the Miracle on Ice hockey team, departs from Plattsburgh Air Force Base to meet with Pres. Jimmy Carter.

John Quinn scores 2 goals as flu-stricken St. John's defeats Salmon River 5-1.

Rich Reynolds, Tom Finney, Jamie Douglass and Ed McCallister lead AuSable Valley to a 70-67 win over MAI in the CVAC semifinals. John Thompson nets 32 for the Mounties.

Guy Garrow fires in 34 and Larry Moskowitz adds 21 as PHS tops Moriah 93-72 in the other semifinal. Mike Mimas leads the Vikings with 18.

40 YEARS AGO (1970)

Pete Hamilton, an Airborne regular in 1966, captures the Daytona 500.

Harry Petersen of Lake Placid drives his 4-man bobsled to victory in the Kennedy Games in Lake Placid. Danny Say, Ken Kesterman and Paul King complete the gold-medal team.

Tom Peryea of Husson College is the top seed at 167 pounds in the NAIA Wrestling Championships.

Jon O'Brien scores 25 points to lead the Champlain Rockets to a 76-62 win over the CCIL All-Stars. Charlie Shatraw leads the stars with 17.

50 YEARS AGO (1960)
Rick Frisbie scores 29 as Westport downs Willsboro 63-53 to extend its two-year unbeaten streak to 38 games in MVL basketball.

Jim Layhee scores 34 points to lead Saranac over Mooers 55-30. Leon Miller leads Mooers with 16.

Dick Latour scores 16 and Butch Gunning, 15, as Ticonderoga thumps Mineville 68-57. Charlie Turek scores 25 for the Red Flame.

Elizabeth Latour of Saranac Lake and Joan Fortune of Lake Placid team to win the girls' pee wee bobsled championships at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

John Phillips scores 20 points to spark St. Mary's of Champlain to a 60-34 win over Altona.



Paul Beattie tosses in 23 to lead AuSable Forks to a 61-52 triumph over Mineville.

Freddie Rescigno and Tony Buffa each score 20 as MAI wraps up the Catholic League championship with a 63-41 win over St. Joseph's.

60 YEARS AGO (1950)

Dick Krause, Jim Moore, Bob Eells and Dick Moore lead Plattsburgh High to victory in a three-team ski meet with Keeseville and host Elizabethtown.

Dick Cheverette scores 25 points to lead Peru to a 47-42 win over Dannemora, giving the Indians the CCIL crown. Bob Sweeney scores 15 for the Knights.

Mike Kukie scores 16 points and John Podres, 15, as Mineville completes a 12-0 season with a 52-40 win over St. John's. Jim Sears leads the Irish with 15.

70 YEARS AGO (1940)
Roy Gallant, Hobby O'Brien and Clarence Jarvis lead St. John's to a 27-22 win over PHS, giving the Irish their first mythical championship in basketball.

Tuffield Latour and Paul Dupree win the North American championships, giving them a sweep of the 2-man bobsled races at Mt. Van Hoevenberg for the year.

Jack Wilkins, 17, of Lake Placid wins the downhill, but Bjorn Lie of the New York City Norsemen's Club is named the Skimeister of the Lake Placid Club's 3-day ski meet.

Bom Gilbo scores 15 points to lead Port Henry to a 40-32 win over Mineville. Joe Dombrosky nets 11 for the Red Flamem.

Karl Bevilacqua scores 16 points, but Ticonderoga falls to Plattsburgh High 43-33.
