PLATTSBURGH — There will be a lot of new faces representing Section VII at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships in two weeks.
Of the 50 athletes who qualified for the March 6 meet at Cornell University, only 14 have experienced the degree of competition at the indoor meet. Unlike the state outdoor meet where there are separate divisions for large and small schools, the indoor championships is one size fits all.
Last year, for instance, Seton Catholic's Genna Hartung, who has since gone on to Cornell University, was the lone Section VII runner to place at the state indoor meet and she needed to clip 18 seconds off her previous best to come in sixth in the 3,000 meters.
Two-time state cross-country champion Michael Champagne of Seton Catholic looks to be the section's best hope this March. He has campaigned outside of the area this winter and could be looking at a top-10 finish in the 3,200 meters.
Once again, Saranac will send the biggest delegation to the state meet. The Chiefs, who captured the Section VII team title for the girls and came in second in the boys' meet, qualified 15 Saturday night at the Plattsburgh State Field House. That's up from the 11 they sent last year, which was also the high for 2009.
Peru will have 11 boys and girls at the sate meet while Seton Catholic has eight athletes eligible and Beekmantown, six. Ticonderoga will send five, AuSable Valley and Saranac Lake, two each, and Plattsburgh High, one.
A number of athletes qualified in two events: Seton Catholic's Ryan Barcomb, Anna Rabideau, Rhea Breyette and Alexa Cosgro.; Ian Tavano, Rachel Danis and Megan Black; Adam Shearer, Brendan Courneene and Korinne Stay of Beekmantown; Robbie Bailey, Alexandra Farrington, Katie McIntosh and Melissa Whyman of Saranac; Jonathyn Granger of Ticonderoga; Austin Davis of AuSable Valley and Vanessa Salamy of Saranac Lake.
