POTSDAM — A lot of good came out of Plattsburgh State's 7-3 victory at Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's hockey Friday night.

"We battled back for a win on the road," said Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery. "We got two guys back in the lineup. And, we scored seven goals.

"If we have had a weakness this year, it has been finding the back of the net."

The Cardinals closed out the regular season with a 17-4-4 mark and a 13-2-1 record in SUNYAC play. Plattsburgh State is now idle until hosting a SUNYAC Tournament semifinal game next Saturday at the Stafford Ice Arena.

However, it took the Cardinals a period and a half to get on the scoreboard Friday night.

The Bears (9-13-2, 5-10-1) held a 2-0 lead midway through the game. But, Plattsburgh State then rattled off seven goals within a 15:33 span in the second and third periods to break it open.

Bill Tsekos gave Potsdam a 1-0 lead with 6:57 gone in the first period.

Despite being down, 1-0, after one, Emery wasn't discouraged.

"We played a great first period," he said. "One mental mistake cost us a goal, but we still played pretty well."

Todd Hosmer then put the Bears up, 2-0, at 10:38 of the second and that may have helped Plattsburgh State.

"We had three two-on-ones we didn't score on and then they made it 2-0," Emery said. "Maybe, that ticked us off."

Kyle Kudroch finally put the Cardinals on the board at 11:14 and was followed by Vick Schlueter scoring a power-play goal at 12:14, Matt Bessing at 17:49 and Patrick Jobb at 19:32.

"Our second period was our best one," Emery said. "We had some good chances, like we did in the first period, but we hit the back of the net with them.

"We also hit two crossbars and could have been ahead by more than 4-2."

A Potsdam penalty at the end of the second period led to Ian DeLong's power-play goal at 1:12 of the final stanza.

"We took advantage of a lack of discipline on their part," Emery said. "That was a big goal to start the third for us."

After Connor Treacy's goal at 4:26 pulled the Bears to within, 5-3, Phil Farrow's unassisted goal put the Cardinals back up on top by three goals shortly after, at 4:48.

Defenseman Mike Kavanagh closed out the Plattsburgh State scoring at the 6:47 mark.

Kavanagh and forward Eric Satim returned to the lineup Friday for the Cardinals and were welcome additions.

"Both played real well," Emery said. "I was surprised how good they were considering how long they have been out of the line-up."

Ryan Williams stopped 18 of 21 shots in the Plattsburgh State nets and Trevor O'Neill made 27 saves on 34 shots for the Bears.

Plattsburgh State went 2-for-6 on the powerplay and held Potsdam scoreless on three tries with a man advantage.

"Our special teams were also good tonight," Emery said.
