Cardinal women weather early flurry

OSWEGO — Kevin Houle said his team needs to play better at the beginning of games than it did Friday night in Oswego.

But that didn't stop the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team from netting three first-period goals on its way to a 7-1 triumph over the Lakers in ECAC West action.

"They kind of came at us in the first," Houle said. "Oswego was excited to play, playing for a playoff spot. We were able to weather the storm (early on)."

Steph Moberg recorded a hat trick, which included a shorthanded goal just 2:50 into the first period.

Teammate Kristen Bond scored twice in the opening stanza, as well, to help the Cardinals (21-1-2) to a 3-1 lead at the first break.

"We came out kind of slow in the first period," Houle said. "We were still able to get a 3-1 lead, which is ironic in that sense."

A more telling statistic of the period may have been shots. Plattsburgh outshot the Lakers (7-16-1) by a 49-14 margin in the game, yet only put 10 shots on net in the first.

Moberg netted her second of the night at 18:02 in the second period, and Plattsburgh went into cruise control in the third with three scores.

Moberg made it 5-1 at 8:09 in the final stanza, and Megan DiJulio scored twice in the last six minutes to extend the lead to 7-1.

"Steph Moberg had a big game, as she's always a threat on the ice," Houle said. "And Bond had two from the blue line, so it was good for the defense to get involved."

Both of Bond's goals were on the power play. The Cardinals were an efficient 3-for-7 with the extra skater.

"It was a pretty physical game in front of both nets," Houle said. "The girls kind of took a bit of a beating, but we were able to take advantage of the power plays."

Steph Moon, Laurie Bowler, Brittany Meade and Kara Buehler each tallied two assists in the game, and Jenna Kirkwood scored Oswego's only goal of the game.

Plattsburgh goaltender stopped 13 of 14 shots, and Emi Williams made 42 saves for the Lakers.

The Cardinals face off against Oswego again today at 3 p.m.

"I expect Oswego to, again, come out and give everything they have in the first period," Houle said.
