Westport girls win close one

CROWN POINT — The Westport girls survived their toughest test of the season thus far Friday night with a 31-27 victory over Indian Lake/Long Lake in the overall Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference championship game.

"Indian Lake/Long Lake played well," said Westport coach Hokie McKinley. "They didn't shoot all that well, but played great defense."

Kalika Hopkins led the unbeaten Eagles (17-0) with 11 points, while Martha McKinley and Christina Sherman added nine apiece. McKinley led Westport with 13 rebounds.

The Eagles' cause was hurt by the absence of Willa McKinley, who suffered an ankle injury in practice on Thursday.

"She should be okay for the sectionals," Hokie McKinley said.

Carli Reynolds led Indian Lake/Long Lake with 14 points and no other Orange player had more than four points.

Indian Lake/Long Lake held a 7-2 lead after one before Westport went on a 10-2 run in the second stanza for a 14-9 halftime lead.

"We had a good second quarter, but they outscored us in two other quarters," McKinley said. "We never lost the lead in the second half. We would stretch it out a little and they would fight back."

Martha McKinley hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to seal it for the Eagles.
